The District of Columbia's public works department and 11 other localities will receive grants from Dell Inc. to organize and promote computer recycling.<br>

Nonprofit organizations in five cities also won grants to conduct local PC recycling programs. The communities are Anchorage, Alaska; Atlanta; Columbia, S.C.; Kansas City, Mo. and Milwaukee.Federal agencies have been urged to recycle their old desktop computers , and the Environmental Protection Agency recently started a consumer-oriented program at .

The District of Columbia's public works department and 11 other localities will receive grants from Dell Inc. to organize and promote computer recycling.

The 12 recipients, chosen from more than 200 applicants, are getting $10,000 each from the PC maker for activities between Feb. 1 and June 30. Communities are expected to collect PCs from all manufacturers, not just Dell, and they can choose their own recycling vendors.

Besides the D.C. Public Works Department's Office of Recycling, grant recipients are:

  • Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority, San Ramon, Calif.

  • Centre County Solid Waste Authority, State College, Pa.

  • Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, Jackson, Miss.

  • Santa Fe Solid Waste Management Agency, Santa Fe, N.M.

  • Town of Bethlehem, Albany, N.Y.

  • Knoxville Solid Waste Office, Knoxville, Tenn., and suburbs
