The Army's European Command will use software from Quest Software Inc. of Irvine, Calif., to manage its Microsoft network infrastructure.The command, based in Heidelberg, Germany, has purchased Quest Microsoft infrastructure management products to migrate numerous Windows NT networks into a single network. The products will also consolidate 248 Windows NT domains into a single active directory with three domains.The command will use Quest Reporter, Quest Migrator and Quest Consolidator, among other software, after conducting several successful pilots. Command leaders expect to roll out the new network for the command's 65,000 users.. The Navy Department's eBusiness Operations Office has chosen four projects to begin pilot implementation under the Rapid Acquisition Incentive-Net Centricity program for 2004.The eBusiness office, the executive agent for RAI-NC, said it selected the four pilots from more than 100 submissions from across the Defense Department.'The 2004 RAI-NC portfolio provides business solutions common to all the services and focuses on rapid support to the warfighter,' said Navy Capt. Chris Vitt, acting deputy commander of the office. 'These pilots also advance proof-of-concept projects using commercially available and leading-edge technology, and provide project results capable of being scaled across the DOD enterprise.'The 2004 projects selected include:. The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency will issue a second solicitation for its NextView project after the breakdown of negotiations with Space Imaging LLC of Thornton, Colo., on the project.Since October, the agency had been talking with the commercial remote-sensing company on how it could play a role in the $1 billion NextView.Through the project, the imagery agency wants to promote R&D of next-generation tools to produce images captured by commercial satellites and strengthen the government's alliance with the remote-sensing industry.Last fall, the agency awarded a five-year, $530 million contract to DigitalGlobe Inc. of Longmont, Colo., to capture and disseminate high-resolution images from commercial satellites.The agency planned to award a second contract worth $500 million, and Space Imaging was the only other vendor to bid on the first contract.But those talks failed, and the agency decided it should seek new bids, spokeswoman Joan Mears said.There is no target date for when the request for proposals will hit the streets, Mears said.

- Acquisition Spend Analysis Pilot to create an infrastructure that gives users greater access to procurement analysis data. Users will be able to identify procurement trends, report purchasing patterns and identify ways to save money. It is being led by the Office of Defense Procurement and Acquisition Policy.
- Java Applet for Common Access Card, an open, standards-based Java applet that provides secure, encrypted communication and digital-signature capabilities for any DOD application using a Web browser and a Common Access Card. The Army is the project lead.
- Virtual Missions Operations Center, an Air Force project to enable virtual mission operations for command and control of space-based and unmanned air vehicle sensor data.
- Test and Evaluation Weblog Project, a Navy project to use commercial technology that allows frequent updates to a Web site to improve information sharing. It can be deployed to link program managers, project experts, contractors, sponsors and warfighters.
