The Defense Information Systems Agency recently finished the first round of the Defense Finance and Accounting System server consolidation project.During the first phase, DISA's Center for Computing Services consolidated 41 DFAS server applications at 10 sites into three Systems Management Centers.The project was completed early and under budget, according to a DISA news release.The center is now consolidating the remaining DFAS server apps and plans to fully implement the infrastructure in the spring of 2005.The consolidation goals are to improve operational efficiency, reduce processing costs, and reduce labor requirements and the number of computing services locations, while improving disaster recovery and backup services for server operations. The Army has hired SRA International Inc. of Fairfax, Va., to develop and maintain an integrated Force Management System.Under the five-year task order, potentially worth $22.5 million, SRA will integrate four existing systems to create a single system to support collaboration and secure development of the Army's force structure at each user's desktop.SRA will also sustain operation of current information systems during the move to the new system, according to a company news release.The Force Management System Project Office of the Army's Program Executive Office for Enterprise Information Systems will manage the contract.'Our goal for the new Force Management System is to dramatically streamline the Army's Force Management process,' said Robert Burciaga, SRA vice president and business manager for Army programs. 'We will do more than merely merge the legacy systems and implement an integrated database.'The Army's Director of Force Management develops the organizational structure of personnel and materiel for the service and is transforming the Army into modular units of mobile and flexible forces, capable of adapting to changing conditions and threats.In 2002, SRA developed and deployed the interim Structure and Manpower Allocation System for the director of force management.SRA will provide program management, software development, database design and development, operations and maintenance, systems engineering and information assurance.Subcontractors include CACI International Inc. of Arlington, Va.; Richard S. Carson & Associates Inc. of Bethesda, Md.; and Northrop Grumman Corp. The Army Human Resources Command, headquartered in Alexandria, Va., has automated the selection board process for enlisted personnel.Using its Enlisted Selection Board System, the command recently conducted its first fully automated enlisted selection board and electronic board file validation, eliminating the need to have hard-copy promotion board files on soldiers.The system also makes an electronic version of the official military personnel file, photo and Enlisted Record Brief for use by voting members of the sergeant major board.The sergeant major board, held recently in Indianapolis, was the first complete board conducted with the system.
