President Bush nominates Lt. Gen. James T. Conway for Marines' top post.

On the heels of an investigation into the killing of Iraqi civilians in Haditha, President Bush has nominated Lt. Gen. James T. Conway to be Marine Corps commandant.

Conway, the Joint Staff's director of operations, has also been nominated for appointment to the rank of general. If confirmed by the Senate, Conway would replace Gen. Michael Hagee, the current commandant, who is retiring. Hagee announced his plans to retire before the controversy erupted over Haditha, but some felt the ensuing investigation would delay his retirement.

Conway previously served as president of Marine Corps University at Quantico, Va. He has also headed up the 1st Marine Division and the I Marine Expeditionary Force. He commanded I MEF during two combat tours in Iraq.

Conway graduated with honors from the Basic School, the U.S. Army Infantry Officers' Advanced Course, the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and the Air War College.

Bush also nominated Navy Rear Adm. Robert B. Murrett to the grade of vice admiral and assignment as director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. Murrett currently works as director of naval intelligence in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations.

If confirmed, Murrett will replace retired Air Force Lt. Gen. James R. Clapper Jr.

Murrett previously worked as commander of the Atlantic Intelligence Command, director for intelligence for the Joint Forces Command and vice director for intelligence on the Joint Staff.

He received his bachelor's degree in history from the University of Buffalo and master's degrees in government and strategic intelligence from Georgetown University and the Defense Intelligence College.
