The winners of AFCEA Bethesda InnovateIT Awards credited their teams for their projects’ success.

Teamwork was key to the innovation celebrated at the AFCEA Bethesda InnovateIT Awards, which recognize individuals whose contributions in IT have significance beyond their organizations.

The awards were anounced June 1 at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. The Defense Health Agency’s Lt. Col. Mark Mellott and David Mihelcic, CTO at the Defense Information Systems Agency, tied for the Defense outstanding achievement award.

Mellott, the chief at the Execution Branch, Health IT Innovation and Advanced Technology Development Division, was recognized for leading a team developing an end-to-end government process to support health IT solutions for soldiers.  “I’m really humbled that I got to be here and represent so many people on our team,” Mellott told GCN. “We’ve got a great team of developers and contractors working together, plus it’s easy for me because I have the best mission: to take care of those on the leading edge of the battlefield.”

Mihelcic was recognized for the Software Defined Everything project that ties together cloud computing and software-defined networking to deliver state-of-the-art speed, agility and cybersecurity for soldiers.

Tyrone Grandison, the deputy chief data officer at the Department of Commerce, won the citizen outstanding achievement award for his team’s work to increase usability of Commerce data. Other winners included Jeffery McMullan, the contracting officer at the General Services Administration’s Federal Systems Integration and Management Center, who won the emerging leader of the year award for government, and Earl Lawrence, the chief of Unmanned Aircraft Systems for the Federal Aviation Administration, for his efforts to establish a sound, safe methodology for the integration of unmanned aircraft into the national airspace.
