Juniper Networks introduces new applications and services that enable customers to deliver voice, video and other multimedia services in ways that require less bandwidth and lower costs for high-volume users.

Juniper Networks Inc. announced today it is introducing a series of new applications and services that will enable customers to deliver voice, video and other multimedia services in ways that require less bandwidth and lower costs for high-volume users.

Among other new capabilities, the applications can combine multiple voice calls into a single IP packet, streamlining transmission loads, said Jim Kelly, senior product line manager for Juniper, in a briefing with Government Computer News.

“So instead of each call having its own packet, you can cluster 10 calls at a time into a single packet,” he said. That’s particularly helpful in areas where there are satellite or other bandwidth limitations. The new solutions, according to Kelly, represent a different approach to VOIP that typically converts analog calls into Internet-ready packets. “We don’t handle it as VOIP but as circuit emulation,” he said.

The new services build on Juniper’s Intelligent Services Edge portfolio by providing new features that simplify upgrades to legacy networks operated by government agencies, enterprises and service providers.

Additionally, Juniper said it is delivering hardware and software features that reduce costs associated with upgrading legacy voice and data networking equipment as users attempt to migrate to next-generation IP transport networks and services.

The new applications deliver voice and multimedia services over the Internet using a comprehensive Integrated Multiservice Gateway (IMSG) solution. The IMSG solution integrates standards-based session border control (SBC) signaling and media-gateway functions with sophisticated, high-performance routing and comprehensive security features, including intrusion prevention software, IPSec and firewall services.

By integrating these features into a cohesive service chain, customers will be able to avoid some of the costs and complexity associated with deploying service-specific appliances to perform voice, video, and multimedia functions. Juniper estimates that by eliminating or reducing the need for stand-alone appliances, such as SBCs, the IMSG solution can reduce power consumption by 30 percent or more.

Integrating these functions within the routing infrastructure also provides greater scalability than discrete appliances.

Juniper said because the Multiservices cards provide dedicated processing resources, customers will be able to add these services without affecting the performance of other services running on the router.

The new solution is expected to offer an alternative approach to VOIP upgrades for organizations dealing with legacy voice infrastructure and time-division multiplexed (TDM) circuit-based networking equipment.

Juniper said its new hardware and software features are designed for Circuit-to-Packet (CTP) series, BX Series Multi-Access Gateways, and M Series Multiservice Edge Routers.

New Voice Modules and software updates for the CTP Series provide analog voice, voice compression and echo cancellation support, which enable customers to reliably transport analog voice, serial data, and TDM based services over an IP/MPLS network.

Together, these enhancements facilitate the transport of voice, radio, legacy data and many other types of traffic over a single, converged IP/MPLS infrastructure. This enables service providers, government agencies and enterprises to realize the cost and operational benefits of a next-generation IP infrastructure, while leveraging investments in existing legacy voice and circuit-based networking equipment.

Juniper said it also introducing Telchemy embedded Performance Monitor (TePM), a comprehensive router-integrated IP performance management application that facilitates service-level monitoring and troubleshooting for a broad collection of IP services.

By providing active network, session and application layer monitoring for a wide variety of IP voice and data services from within the routing infrastructure, TePM improves efficiency and eliminates the costs associated with deploying stand-alone monitoring or measurement appliances. This integration also brings the added benefits of increased scale, performance, and reliability.

TePM was developed by Telchemy, a Juniper Open IP Solution Development Program (OSDP) member and a leading provider of IP and VoIP performance management solutions.
