The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has released a video previewing three new practice worlds for participants in virtual portion of the urban circuit of DARPA's Subterranean (SubT) Challenge.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has released a video previewing three new practice worlds for participants in virtual portion of the urban circuit of DARPA's Subterranean (SubT) Challenge, a competition seeking new ways to quickly map, navigate and search underground environments.

SubT features both live and virtual teams competing in three circuits: caves, underground urban environments and man-made tunnels.  Competitors in the live track send their wireless autonomous vehicles through communications-challenged underground environments to complete set tasks. Participants in the virtual track deploy simulated models of vehicles, systems, environments and terrain in a cloud-based environment to demonstrate their solutions.

The virtual-track teams each assemble a roster of robots and sensors from a repository of available assets, keeping their simulated "cost" under a specified limit. After loading in their software and algorithms, the teams earn points as their robots map the tunnel environment and identify artifacts during a timed run.

Participants can use the new practice worlds to repeatedly test and perfect their approach before they submit one official solution for scoring.

DARPA has developed a full SubT virtual testbed that includes the SubT Tech Repository, the SubT Simulator simulation environment, automated testing and assessment tools along with associated software support infrastructure. The SubT circuit events run on Amazon Web Services AWS systems.
