General Dynamics Itronix added boosted the processor power of its new version of the GoBook VR-2, the GD6000 vehicle-rugged notebook PC.

General Dynamics Itronix this week announced the availability of the new GD6000 vehicle-rugged notebook PC for service in vehicles such as trucks, patrol cars and utility vans.

The GD6000 is the successor to the GoBook VR-2, and the first product to drop the GoBook name. General Dynamics Itronix is planning to migrate all of its GoBook line to the General Dynamics brand.

The main difference between the GD6000 and its predecessor is improved performance, said Tim Hill, product marketing manager for General Dynamics Itronix. The GD6000 features an Intel T9400 Core 2 duo processor, a 120G hard drive and up to 4G memory.

A vehicle-rugged notebook has different requirements than a standard rugged unit, Hill said. A fully rugged notebook is rainproof, for example. A vehicle-rugged notebook is going to spend 99 percent of its time in a vehicle, sheltered from the rain, so that specification is unnecessary. What is really important in a vehicle-rugged notebook is resistance to vibration, heat, cold, altitude and humidity, Hill said. "They don’t want a notebook to die in the field because it got vibrated to death," he said.

The GD6000 features a 13.3-inch DynaVue display, the company’s proprietary display technology. The DynaVue screen meets Mil-Std 3009 specs, which set the standard for LCD displays in cockpit applications.

The GD6000 is available for pre-order. It can be configured with Windows XP or Vista and will be ready for Windows 7 when that operating system becomes available.
