The popular retail chain, Target<\/a>, is now scrambling as it tries to keep up with customer demand amidst an egg shortage that has come about as a result of an ongoing bird flu outbreak. The bullseye logoed grocer is not alone in this empty carton struggle as retailers across the country are trying to cope with this shortage after millions of birds were put down due to concerns of the latest flu strain that has hit the coops.<\/p>\n

Bird flu outbreak<\/h2>\n

In 2022, the H5N1 strain of bird flu first made its way onto American soil and has since wreaked massive havoc on the winged creatures. An estimated 150 million birds have faced a mass culling over the past few years due to this outbreak, with approximately 23 million birds put down in the last month alone — according to statistics taken from the United States Agriculture Department.<\/p>\n

As expected, a decrease in supply is steadily driving prices up and consumers are not too happy about this new price hike amidst times of rising inflation rates and increased costs of living.<\/p>\n

Target shelling out apologies amidst egg shortage<\/h2>\n

The fallout of this egg shortage now has retailers putting out apology notices along with limiting egg purchases for customers to prevent an uneven distribution of the product amongst customers.<\/p>\n

A Target located in Wisconsin has put up notices on its nearly empty egg shelves apologizing to customers for the inconvenience. The note reads as follows, “We are currently experiencing high demand and supplier shortages for eggs. We are actively seeking additional supply. We apologize for any inconvenience.”<\/p>\n

Unlike its retail peers, Target has not yet imposed any sort of limit or restriction on the number of eggs or cartons a customer may purchase. Presumably, a limit will likely be imposed by Target eventually if the shortage keeps up.<\/p>\n

Walmart and H-E-B stores have not announced any restrictions or limits for their respective stores either.<\/p>\n

Conversely, Trader Joe’s is enforcing a dozen eggs maximum purchase limit on its customers, with customers only being allowed one carton per day.<\/p>\n

Whole Foods customers are allowed three cartons of eggs, and Sam’s Club shoppers will also face a limit of two cartons per customer.<\/p>\n

Costco Warehouses are imposing the strictest restriction on its customers out of all retailers. Costco shoppers are limited to a three egg purchase during this time of poultry crises.<\/p>\n

Price increases impacting the nation at large<\/h2>\n

These egg shortages are not only impacting grocery prices, restaurants are also feeling the heat and some eateries have made the decision to increase the prices of their egg-based dishes.<\/p>\n

At present, the price of eggs are at an all-time high, with the average cost of a dozen eggs costing $4.95 as of January. Just a month prior in December, the average cost for a carton was $4.15 — as per data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This price increase is especially astounding when compared to a year ago in January 2024 where a dozen of grade A eggs would only set you back $2.52 — meaning that the price for a carton of eggs has almost doubled in just one year.<\/p>\n

To prevent excessive loss, restaurants are now including extra surcharges to some of their meals. Waffle House, for example, is now including a 50 cent surcharge per egg.<\/p>\n

$4.95 is still on the lower end of the price spectrum for a dozen of eggs. Some states are paying close to $7 for a carton, and the price of eggs in Hawaii is sitting at a shocking $9.73.<\/p>\n

One of President Trump’s first promises when he was elected to office in August 2024 was to bring food prices down but any sort of decrease is yet to be seen.
