It even began the new year on something of a shaky leg, but could things finally be looking up or is this just a brief calm before another storm?

Companies like Walmart, Macy’s, and Joann, who were thought to be the top in the industry were all facing major setbacks and underperformance that ultimately resulted in the compulsion to downsize their respective companies. However, with new beginnings, some good has to work its way into the situation and its seems that some retailers have big plans to better their companies for the year ahead.

Inflation and price increases

Consumers have been struggling more so than usual as of late. Cost of living expenses are at an all time high and inflation has recently risen meaning there might not be any financial relief in sight — at least not for the near future. Recent months have shown a steady increase in the price of groceries and most, if not all, customers are feeling the pinch.

Since November, the Consumer Price Index has revealed an overall increase with the majority of goods showing an increase when compared month to month.

The Index noted the following increases:

Food at home: increase 0.4%

Food away from home: increase 0.5%

Energy: increase 0.2%

New cars: increase 0.6%

Used cars: increase 2.0%

Apparel: increase 0.2%

Medical care services: increase 0.4%

Shelter: increase 0.3%

USA Facts has discovered that “out of nine grocery staples defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the cost of a dozen eggs increased the most over last year (2023), from $2.06 to $3.82, up 85.%.”

“Other grocery staples that cost more this year include beef, chicken, tomatoes, whole milk, and bread. Beef, chicken, tomatoes, and whole milk increased more than the 1.3% average for groceries,” they added.

Additionally, The Street has calculated that when compared to prices prior to COVID-19, food prices have increased by a shocking 28%.

How is Walmart, Costco, and other grocers combatting this crisis of cost?

Retailers can only continue to exist if customers have the finances to make purchases from them and with the dollar not stretching as far as it used to, big box retailers have had to change their approach.

Many larger corporations like Costco, Walmart, and Target are promising customers a wider offering of groceries whilst maintaining lower prices in an attempt to retain its customer base, as well as allowing for new customers with tighter budgets to shop at these stores.

Walmart closed off 2024 with the closure of several of its underperforming stores. Many assumed this spelled bad news for the company’s future, however, it appears that move was indeed strategic. By cutting the losses of underperforming stores, the retailer will now enact plans to expand business in other aspects. Walmart has also proclaimed that it will return grocery pricing, food included, to the more affordable, pre-inflation rates that have not been seen in a long time. Consumers have not yet felt this change however.

Walmart is presently the top grocer in the country — a position which might change if DEI controversies and looming boycotts continue. As such, the company has an overwhelming brick and mortar presence that enables it to retain a comfortable market share. Additionally, the company is continuously expanding its online presence and offerings to benefit shoppers who prefer the convenience of e-commerce and have no issue paying extra for delivery services.

The company has not disclosed the exact number of Walmart+ members who are paying the $98 fee to enjoy benefits like free delivery and exclusive discounts. CEO Doug McMillon said, “I don’t want it to become some proxy for the value of the company.”

Expansions

Costco, Target, Trader Joe’s, and Walmart all have plans in motion to open new stores throughout 2025, with a focus on growing and high-population areas.

The expansions will cover around 10 states, namely:

Walmart:

Mountain View, California

Eastvale, California

Cypress, Texas

Frisco, Texas

Melissa, Texas

Celina, Texas

Tuscaloosa, Alabama

Milton, Florida

Pace, Florida

Costco:

Brentwood, California

Genesee County, Michigan

Highland, California

Prosper, Texas

Sharon, Massachusetts

Weatherford, Texas

Trader Joe’s:

Northridge, California

Sherman Oaks, California

Tarzana, California

Seattle, Washington

Bellingham, Washington

Murfreesboro, Tennessee

Berwyn, Pennslyvania

Staten Island, New York

Hoover, Alabama

Two locations in Washington, DC

Rockville, Maryland

Target:

South Lake Tahoe, California

Surprise, Arizona

Denton, Texas

The retail sector may have ended 2024 on somewhat of a sour note.
