In these highly concentrated areas, owning a car is not always as convenient as it seems, and, in fact, it comes with its own set of problems. Cities are filled with apartment buildings to maximize space, however, not all of these buildings offer a guaranteed parking space. Overnight parking lots can be costly or not situated close enough to your apartment building. As such, this often results in drivers parking their cars on the street which can sometimes cause a blockage on the road as other cars or buses cannot fit around the parked vehicle.

To crack down on this type of issue and encourage a better flow of traffic, the city of Los Angeles, California, is now introducing a fine for illegal parking and drivers who who do not follow these rules will be made to pay hundreds of dollars to the state.

Drivers in California must be prepared to pay hundreds of dollars in fines

As of February 18, Californian drivers in the city of Los Angeles will now be subject to fines amounting to $300 or more if their vehicles are found to be parked illegally. The Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT), in collaboration with Metro, will now be penalizing drivers who do not adhere to the regulations regarding driving and parking as set out by the Department of Transportation.

Parking any vehicle in bus lanes is now prohibited according to the city’s new law. Additionally, any parked vehicle blocking transit stops on routes taken by the Los Angeles Metro system will also result in its driver being liable to pay a fine.

The new law dictates that a fine of $293 must be paid by drivers in violation of the parking restriction on bus lanes and public transport stops.

Where and how will this new law be imposed on drivers across the city?

The agency shared a statement which revealed that as of February 18, this new regulation will be implemented to bus lines 212 and 720. These bus lines serve La Brea Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard, respectively.

The decision to implement this fining system came about in order to reduce the delays faced by passengers on these particular bus lines.

“Without enforcement, a single car parked in a bus lane can delay dozens or even hundreds of passengers. This is not just about ticketing, but about ensuring our buses are running on schedule and getting our passengers to their destinations on time,” Los Angeles County Board Supervisor and Metro Board Chair Janice Hahn reiterated.

The Los Angeles Metro has lead the installation of fifty surveillance cameras so as to ensure citizens are complying to the new rule. The cameras have been placed on buses that use routes that are most severely impacted by these blockages due to parked cars.

These new cameras that are being installed on buses are no ordinary devices. The devices come equipped with artificial intelligence and this AI has the automatic ability to detect vehicles that are blocking the lanes and routes designated for bus and Metro traffic. According to information taken from the official website, the cameras will be installed on “subway lines 910 and 950, which serve the J line, as well as on line 70, which serves Olive St/Grand Ave.”

If any non-bus vehicle is found to be parked in any designated bus lane during operating hours, a fine will be issued to the owner of the parked vehicle. This program has been in the works for some months now and was first announced in November. Since then, violators of the rule have received mail notices warning them that future violations will lead to a fine. First time offenders will be subjected to a $293 fine, whilst repeat offenders will have to cough up $406 for each subsequent offense.

Living in the city means densely populated areas and traffic on roads that never seem to clear up regardless of the time of day, and sometimes even night.
