The retail apocalypse strikes again and this time its furniture giant, Big Lots who is saying goodbye — though not for good. Late last year the retailer was compelled to file for bankruptcy and has since begun to shut down<\/a> all underperforming branches in the hopes of minimizing losses.<\/p>\n

Big Lots downsizing to Little Lots?<\/h2>\n

Research conducted by Green Street Advisors has revealed that as things currently stand, close to 25% of the largest shopping malls across the country will potentially be closed as soon as 2027. The industry at large is going through what seems to be an extended rough patch and Big Lots is just one of many specialized retailers who is struggling to stay afloat.<\/p>\n

Despite filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September last year, the retailer will still have a decent amount of stores in operation. Two hundred stores will be taken over by Variety Wholesalers and continue to operate as Big Lots and these stores can be found in North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, and West Virginia.<\/p>\n

Bargain Town, Maxway, Roses Discount Stores, Roses Express, and Bill’s Dollar Store are all subsidiaries of Variety Wholesalers as well.<\/p>\n

Company finances<\/h2>\n

As the bankruptcy process progress, Big Lots has sought out aid from an asset liquidation firm in Boston called Gordon Brothers Retail Partners. The retailer submitted a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition as a result of financial struggles and the original plan was to shutter 545 locations in January. However, since then, more stores out of the total 1,389 have been slated for closure.<\/p>\n

Between 2023 and 2024, the retailer recording an alarming decline in sales with the total dropping by $114.5 million. Additionally, after filing for bankruptcy, the company also revealed an astounding amount of debt that amounted to $3.1 billion owed to around 5,000 to 10,000 debtors.<\/p>\n

“Though the majority of our store locations are profitable, we intend to move forward with a more focused footprint to ensure that we operate efficiently and are best positioned to serve our customers,” Bruce Thorn, CEO of Big Lots shared in a statement at the time.<\/p>\n

For the foreseeable future, consumers should expect a shopping experience that is more “focused.”<\/p>\n

According to a statement made to Newsweek <\/em><\/a>by Michael Ryan, a finance expert and the founder of MichaelRyanMoney.com, “Those still shopping at Big Lots should see better merchandise selection and improved pricing strategies as they refocus on what made them successful in the first place: being the go-to destination for extreme bargains.”<\/p>\n
