From store closures to discontinuing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policies within the company, and now ongoing boycotts as a result of the DEI decision along with customers noticing a lack of products of Latin and Mexican origin recently – things are not looking too great for this top of the industry retailer.

Whilst these issues are recent developments, the company has been one amongst many facing the wrath of the ongoing decline in the retail industry. In an attempt to restructure the company, 2024 saw the closing of eleven Walmart locations, along with fifty-one of its health centers. But this begs the question, where does this leave the employees?

With closures comes layoffs

It appears that in addition to downsizing its retail real estate, the company will also be shutting down some of its offices. Remote work is also set to be eliminated and some staff members are facing potential relocation around the United States. Whilst this move forms part of a bigger plan with the goal of reinforced corporate values within, as well as improved operational efficiency, many employees are feeling distressed about the uncertainty of their employment.

A recent statement from the retailer revealed their decision to eliminate the remote work option meaning the full workforce will be required to go into the office. Furthermore, the closure of the North Carolina offices was confirmed. Employees from these offices were notified that they would be required to relocate to the main offices in either California, Washington or New York.

These changes have been in the works since May of last year and it began with the company relocating employees who had previously been posted in Dallas, Toronto, and Atlanta, to the headquarters in Arkansas.

The Arkansas headquarters had also recently been renovated and the reinauguration revealed 12 buildings, multiple service areas, and a spacious parking space.

Why is Walmart doing this?

According to Walmart’s Chief People Officer, Donna Morris, the reason for discontinuing remote work is because “it is necessary to return to in-person work to foster interaction among workers.” Morris further shared that removing the remote work option has “proven to improve productivity and strengthen corporate culture, key elements for the company’s success.”

The supermarket giant has not yet revealed the exact number of employees it will be laying off or relocating. However, this number is expected to be significant as a result of the new measures and changes.

The good news is that the company has promised to offer financial support to any current employees who decide not to relocate during the transitional period. Additionally, employees who do choose to relocate to the stipulated locations within the United States will also receive assistance from the company to aid their relocation and assimilation to the new offices.

Walmart is claiming that these closures and restructuring measures form part of a broader strategy through which the retailer hopes to adapt itself to the rapidly changing and unforgiving market in the United States. The unfortunate pitfall of these decisions is that now employees are feeling high levels of job insecurity in an already tough economy with stagnant job markets. Some employees are even debating between continuing on with the company – relocations and cancelled remote work baggage included – or seeking alternate job opportunities with other companies. This conundrum is something of a catch 22 for employees since relocating might be a tough option, but finding a new job could prove to be even tougher with the current state of things. Not to mention the domino effect of implications that layoffs on a large scale would do to the already tricky economy.

Big box giant Walmart has been the topic of headlines for a wide array of reasons recently and it is not all good.
