The telecom giant has been experiencing a boom in profits recently but it seems the company’s next move might cost them more than expected.

What is T-Mobile’s controversial plan and why do customers hate it?

T-Mobile’s fourth quarter earnings report for 2024 revealed a massive 48% year-by-year increase in net income. A whopping 903,000 post-paid phones were also added by the network carrier during this quarter, along with $16.9 million generated in service revenues, which equates to a 6% year-over-year increase.

T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert said, “In our storied growth history, 2024 was our greatest growth year ever across multiple metrics, and we finished strong,” in a January 29 earnings call.

Whilst the company is clearly in better than usual financial standing as of recent months, what is this upcoming change that may cause the carrier to lose customers?

At a recent meeting, Sievert indirectly revealed that legacy plans, which are customers with older phone plans, are soon going to be faced with a price increase. “You’re going to be hearing about us, for example, getting back to some of the adjustments of legacy pricing that we began last year,” Sievert explained during the meeting.

This change appears to be coming about after the mobile operator raised the prices of its older phone plans, namely, One, Magenta, and Simple Choice. These plans were increased last year by $2 and $5 per line.

Unfortunately for the company, the price increase did not sit well with customers and T-Mobile was slapped with a class action lawsuit. The lawsuit alleged that the company had violated a price-lock guarantee that was promised to customers when they were initially introduced to the plans.

Clear evidence of the price-lock guarantee included with the plans can be found in the company’s “Un-Contract” which allows customers to decide what amount they will pay for the service. According to the 2015 press release announcing the Un-contract, the company claimed, “While your price may go down − it won’t go up.”

Consequently, the lawsuit filed on July 12, 2024 stated that, “T-Mobile is well aware that its customers are angry at being duped by its false advertising.”

Price increases are the last straw for this telecom giant

According to Sievert, the rates and pricing of the current legacy plans are “outdated,” hence the need for an increase.

“We do have an ongoing opportunity to address legacy rate plans across the base,” Sievert elaborated. “And we began a program last year on this. We didn’t complete it – there’s more opportunity this year. And I want to be clear that anything that we might do in this space, we will do in a way that really honors our brand value proposition that we will be the best value, and that means the lowest prices of the majors in this industry.”

Outraged customers have taken to Reddit to share their frustrations, with many threatening to switch over to a different carrier if T-Mobile follows through on the price increases.

One user wrote, “I’ve been with T-Mobile for 12 years. The price increase sucked but I know how the world works and it was still a decent deal. If I get another price increase this close to the last one I know it’s going to be frequent price increases so I’ll just go somewhere else.”

Whilst another countered this threat to change over by saying, “I mean T-Mobile is still hella cheaper than Verizon or AT&T. So although I can understand that you’re tired of the price increases where you going to go? Because you’re going to still be paying way more with Verizon or AT&T then you would with the price increase with t-mobile.”

T-Mobile, one of the largest network carriers in the United States with more than 130 million users nationwide, appears to be at risk of losing customers after hinting at some potentially controversial major changes.
