We are barely even a month into the year, and yet, 2025 already appears to be a bad year for in-person retail as yet another company is set to close the doors of several of its locations<\/a>. This time, it is well-known department store chain, Kohl’s, that has announced the closure of 27 of its stores, set for sometime in early 2025.<\/p>\n

Could all retail be going exclusively digital?<\/h2>\n

Kohl’s, a department store chain known to be struggling, will be closing over two dozen of its stores<\/a> around the U.S.. The timeline for these closures will end in April. The company has cited underperformance as the reason they were driven to make this decision. Whilst 27 is a massive number of stores to close, the closure of a physical retail store no longer comes as a surprise. This number of closures, in fact, appears to be relatively small when compared to the 66 stores that competitor Macy’s<\/a> will be closing as part of their turnaround strategy.<\/p>\n

Retailers have no choice but to increase their digital footprint at the cost of brick and mortar stores if they wish to see the company succeed in this tough economy. More and more consumers are exhibiting a preference to online shopping for its convenience and time efficiency — there are no queues at home. Convenience aside, the constantly rising cost of living and volatile job markets makes it increasingly difficult for consumers to prioritize anything but the bare essentials when budgeting for the month.<\/p>\n

What is the impact of these store closures?<\/h2>\n

The first thought on anyone’s mind when closures are mentioned is layoffs. However, Kohl’s management has stated that employees from store listed for closure will be given the option to transfer to one of the 1,150 other branches. If not, the employees will be granted severance pay.<\/p>\n

The company will not be renewing their lease with the San Bernardino E-commerce fulfillment center when it ends in May. Kohl’s says new technologies will enable them to fulfill orders from more stores instead.<\/p>\n

These changes and cut-backs are likely the result of a drop in turnover and share value. Kohl’s shares have drastically dropped by over 50% in the last year. The net income of the company for this period also dropped from $59 million to $22 million. Additionally, the company reported in November that net sales for the third quarter fell approximately 9% from the previous year.<\/p>\n

The closures of retail brick and mortar stores are likely far from being done. If anything, it is almost like this is now the industry trend. Research firm, CoreSight, recorded more than 7,100 store closures in the retail industry for 2024, ending in November.<\/p>\n
