In the past few months, the retailer made several changes to its food courts. The main reason for this is to remain relevant and to attract new customers. However, this change has been highlighted is one monumental change the retailer is currently taking. The question now is, how will this impact the loyal consumers of Costco?

The monumental change at Costco’s food courts

Costco may soon make a big change when it comes to the soda offerings in hundreds of the retailer’s food courts. There have been online rumours about the popular discount wholesaler, Costco, which is planning to discontinue Pepsi products from its soda fountains. According to the unverified rumours, this change is expected to occur at their local Costco store in early 2025. In exchange for the loss of the Pepsi products, the retailer’s Food Court will now include several Coke products:

Coke,

Coke Zero,

Diet Coke, and

Sprite.

In addition, the Pepsi products have been the prime soda offering at Costco’s food courts since 2013. When the chain switched after failing to negotiate lower distribution costs with Coca-Cola, Pepsi remained a fan favourite at the Costco stores. This switch took several years to complete across Costco’s 800-plus global locations. Therefore, it can be stated that any switch back to Coca-Cola will possibly take the same duration.

However, the kerfuffle was not Costco and Coke’s first flare-up. The two companies had a pricing dispute in early 2009, while the retailer’s food courts still served Coke, resulting in Costco pulling Coke products from all chain stores for a month.

The reason for the change

Both Coke and Pepsi are big names, and both have their respective loyal fans of their distinct flavours. However, it is actually not feasible for restaurants and food courts like Costco to sell both Coca-Cola and Pepsi products. Various soda companies bid on contracts to exclusively distribute their products, meaning that both big names cannot be co-sold, alongside each other, at the same store. Also, as with many things related to business costs, it is also important to think about factors like, the lowest price often wins.

Additionally, by obtaining a low costs contract with Pepsi – and possibly its upcoming Coke contract – Costco also locks out other soda brands that are potentially seen as competitors. Also, for or a large store like Costco, the production cost is likely to be the biggest concern.

Furthermore, the discount of the retailer depends highly on keeping the cost of the business down in a variety of ways. One of these ways could be, obtaining the best deal on supplying its soda fountains. This dynamic was to give credit (or rather blame) for the fact that Costco signed with Pepsi in 2013. According to reports around that time, it highlighted the reason was that Pepsi’s lower bid, made it easier to maintain the price of the famous $1.50 hot dog and soda combo.

Impact on consumers

Many may ask how this will impact the consumers who are used to purchasing Pepsi and those who prefer Pepsi over coke. This is something that the retailer has to work on because consumer may feel that what they prefer is not of importance to the retailer. Therefore, the retailer should suggest the benefits of use the Coke branded drinks and why they should remain loyal consumers, although their favourite drink will not be available anymore.

However, consumers also have to keep in mind that the retailer would not have made this change if it was not in the best interest of the company and the consumers. This is not the only major change, the retailer recently focused on.

One of America’s biggest and most popular retailers, Costco, is making a major change to its food court.
