The silver lining of this is that most, if not all, retailers have refund policies in place that allows customers to return the item and get their money back. Generally, the guidelines and limitations for refunds are similar from store to store — show your proof of payment with the item, unused, in its package and the transaction will be reversed. There are minor differences in policy depending on the type of item and store with some having lengthier windows for valid refunds than others.

Retail giants, Amazon and Walmart are now rolling out a new refund policy that might seem a bit bizarre but will actually save the companies money.

New cost saving strategy for Walmart and Amazon

With the rise in popularity with online shopping, the issue of returns and refunds has become slightly more trickier. An online retail transaction includes additional shipping fees and if a refund is requested, the fees are doubled.

As such, many businesses are now amending their policies to include a “returnless refund” clause. Companies like Amazon and Walmart are now issuing refunds to customers without having the item returned to the them as it works out cheaper.

Take a $20 t-shirt for example. The shipping, processing and restocking fees for this $20 item can add up to $30 or more, meaning the company would run at a loss. By implementing a “returnless refund”, the customer keeps the item and the company would only have to return the money paid by the customer without any additional shipping costs. This system is far more cost-effective in the long run.

This type of refund system has become increasingly popular amongst retailers lately, with fast fashion giants like Shein and Temu also having these policies in effect.

How are “returnless refunds” implemented?

Despite being in effect for quite some time now, many websites do not specify that this type of return is available. Additionally, there are price limits to the system, with smaller or rather lower priced items being the qualifying factor for a non-returnable refund.

The digital marketplace giant, Amazon, has been fine tuning this strategy for years now. A few months ago, however, the retailer decided to expand its offering significantly. As of August last year, Amazon announced that “third party merchants in the United States who use its logistics services would also be able to offer non-returnable refunds.” This change now gives third party retailers the option to enact a “returnless refund” if they wish. Products within a $75 cap are eligible for this system.

In the case of Walmart, the supermarket giant followed in its retail peer’s footsteps. The retailer, who recently began allowing third party sellers to share their inventory on the company website, will also be offering these sellers the discretion to allow non-returnable refunds. Walmart has left the price limit for these special refunds up to the sellers as well. According to Walmart, “sellers will be able to establish their own guidelines for handling these returns instead of maintaining a uniform procedure.”

One could argue that this system creates more waste since customers are now stuck with items they no longer wanted in the first place, increasing its potential of ending up in a landfill. From a company perspective, this system might spark new problems for the companies as it opens an avenue for people to take advantage of. Perhaps this is why none of these companies openly advertise that they offer this kind of refund. On the other hand, it could also be proof of the faith the companies have in their customers.

With the retail landscape, both online and brick and mortar, being as vast as it is, it is more than likely that a consumer will end up making an impulse purchase or two as they go along.
