The warehouse and its deals can only be accessed with a membership and it is perhaps this sense of exclusivity that makes shopping at Costco all the more enticing.

Whilst the retailer may have built its reputation around offering members the best deal possible, along side other amenities, shoppers are now left wondering if the ongoing tensions surround tariff hikes will impact the price of goods at the warehouse.

How does Costco operate?

The warehouse giant’s business model is simple and centered around offering the best possible price. For this reason, the retailer limits the total number of products it has on offer at any given time and because it buys inventory in limited varieties but large quantities, it is able to get the best possible price — which is then passed on to customers.

The retailer has millions of members signed up to its membership program and it uses this large customer base as leverage to negotiate lower prices from vendors when sourcing inventory. The wholesale often requests vendors to change up the packaging or production methods for items to make them more cost efficient. Vendors are happy to oblige to this and accept a slightly lower profit margin because the sheer volume of goods ordered by the warehouse usually more than makes up for it.

The issue with vendors arises when you bring tariffs and taxes into the mix as they are not able to control those, meaning that prices could fluctuate and neither the vendors nor Costco can do anything about it if there is an increase.

When costs were up during the COVID-19 pandemic, the warehouse absorbed some of the excess internally so as to ensure customers remain unaffected. Additionally, to cut costs on shipping, the warehouse also leased its own ships.

Now, the raised tariffs imposed by President Trump poses a new challenge for the retailer.

Tariff troubles in bulk

Unlike other companies, Costco executives are quite open about the state of the company during earnings calls and issues related to memberships or price increases are always addressed or at the very least acknowledged.

For the second quarter earnings call, comments from CEO Ron Vachris appear to be addressing the ongoing tariff issues faced by the nation at large. The company is aware of the looming implications of a tariff increase and seems to be preparing for it.

“As we look ahead to the remainder of this fiscal year, headwinds from foreign exchange look likely to continue,” Vachris said. “Given events over the last week, it is difficult to predict the impact of tariffs, but our team remains agile and our goal will be to minimize the impact of related cost increases to our members.”

“About a third of our sales in the U.S. are imported from other countries, and less than half of those are items coming from China, Mexico and Canada,” he added.

The CEO reiterated that the company will remain dedicated to keeping prices as low as possible despite these external factors and it seems to be a promise that is being held up.

“In uncertain times, our members have historically placed even greater importance on the value of high-quality items at great prices,” Vachris explained. “And our teams will continue to rise to this challenge by leveraging our global buying power, strong supplier relationships and innovation.”

Whilst many retailers have been recording a decline in sales over the last few quarters, Costco appears to be in excellent standing with increases recorded for its net income.

“We believe that the member is probably as much focused now on quality, value and newness as they have been for quite some time,” Chief Financial Officer Gary Millerchip stated. “[They] are still showing that willingness to spend, but they’re being very choiceful where they’re spending their dollars.”

The retailer is also making preemptive moves to minimize impact from the tariffs as best they can.

“One of the things that was an increased cost during the quarter was higher supply-chain costs as we have been continuing to buy more inventory, which we think will be helpful as you think about some of the unpredictability that we’ve seen in supply chain timing and also with the potential risk around tariffs,” Millerchip shared.

Costco Wholesale has quickly risen through the ranks to become a crowd favorite when it comes to grocery shopping thanks to its warehouse style business model that allows for competitive pricing.
