The popularity of online shopping came to be at the cost of brick and mortar sales<\/a> and just about every retailer in the sector has been impacted by this in recent years with many companies having no choice but to scale down their physical real estate.<\/p>\n

Kohl’s, the longstanding and popular department store chain, has been amongst the struggling retailer cohorts during these tense economic times and as such, the year started off with the announcement of branch closures as a result of a seemingly consistent decline in sales.<\/p>\n

Kohl’s says goodbye to more than just 27 locations<\/h2>\n

The decision to close down twenty-seven stores due to underperformance has been in the works since the beginning of this year and now, these locations are in their final hours. According to the company on its official website, March 29 has been marked as the date of closure for these underperforming locations.<\/p>\n

Another big change enacted by the company in recent weeks was its decision to downsize its corporate workforce by 10%, as well as some C-suite changes. More recently, the department store giant also revealed that it would be discontinuing its Amazon return service at selected stores. A company spokesperson has shared that this is just a temporary trial run as the company explores various options to cut costs.<\/p>\n

The Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin based retailer has also confirmed that it will be closing the doors of one of its e-commerce fulfillment centers located in San Bernardino once the current lease ends later this year, in May. This San Bernardino fulfillment center has been operated by Kohl’s<\/a> for over a decade, since 2010.<\/p>\n

For the fourth quarter of 2024, the company recorded a 9.4% decline in sales and a 7.2% decline overall for the year. The department store chain also shared that it “expects a 2% net decrease in sales for 2025.”<\/p>\n

Whilst twenty-seven is a significant figure in terms of store closures, it is still a small fraction of the total number of Kohl’s locations. After the retailer shuts the doors of these underperforming locations, the company will still have more than 1,120 stores in operation across the country.<\/p>\n

                                New CEO at Kohl’s<\/h2>\n

                                The retailer will also be welcoming in Ashley Buchanan as the new CEO once current CEO Tom Kingsbury retires in the coming weeks. It appears that Kingsbury took the helm of an already sinking ship when he stepped in as CEO in 2022. The retailer has recorded a persistent decline in sales for 11 consecutive quarters and as such, many attempts at restructuring and appealing to customers were made — but to no avail unfortunately.<\/p>\n

                                Kingsbury was rather transparent about his mistakes during his run as CEO and said that, “We are not satisfied with our performance in 2024 and are taking aggressive action to reverse the sales decline.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
