Brick and mortar sales have taken an irrecoverable knock since the COVID-19 pandemic and its subsequent lockdown which then led to a seemingly permanent preference for online shopping.<\/p>\n

Macy’s<\/a>, the popular department store has long been struggling to keep up with these market changes, along with a rise in prices due to inflation. Consumers no longer seem to be in possession of enough disposable income to warrant frivolous shopping sprees for new clothes and shoes and as a result many retailers, Macy’s included, have been recording a downtick in overall sales.<\/p>\n

Now, the beloved department store giant is undergoing a major restructuring and in pursuit of this, the company began the year by confirming the closure of around 150 stores.<\/p>\n

Macy’s says goodbye to underperforming stores<\/h2>\n

In the wake of this ongoing “retail apocalypse” that has plagued the sector at large, Macy’s has announced it will be enacting a “Bold New Chapter” strategy in the hopes of increasing profitability for the company. In pursuit of this, the retailer announced in February of last year that it will be shutting the doors of 150 underperforming stores by 2026.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year in January, the retailer confirmed the locations of 66 of these closures. In a January press release, the company explained that this plan “is designed to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth.”<\/p>\n

Amongst others, locations in New York, Florida, Arizona and California were included in the list of closures revealed in January. Some of the more iconic Macy’s locations were also included in this list. Just last weekend, the downtown Brooklyn Macy’s was closed down after almost a thirty year run. The Fulton Street previously housed the first Abraham & Straus department store, but was taken over by Macy’s in 1995.<\/p>\n

According to various local reports, the equally iconic Long Island at Sunrise Mall location in New York has been slated for closure by next month.<\/p>\n

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy\u2019s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go\u2013forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” Macy’s CEO and chairman Tony Spring shared in a statement released in January.<\/p>\n

How many Macy’s store are closing?<\/h2>\n

At the moment, a confirmed 66 locations have been closed or will be closed in the coming weeks. However, by the end of next year, the company has revealed that it plans to bring this total up to 150. Once these closures have been enacted, the department store giant will have a total of 350 Macy’s department stores spread across the country. The company will likely redirect the resources from the underperforming stores towards its remaining 350 locations.<\/p>\n

In a press release, the company confirmed that, “Macy’s still plans to close a total of about 150 underproductive stores, while investing in its 350 current Macy\u2019s locations, through the company’s 2026 fiscal year, which ends Jan. 30, 2027.”<\/p>\n

The locations and closure dates for the remaining 84 stores slated for closure has not yet been revealed. However, a full list of the 66 confirmed store closures can be found here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

        • Houston – 100 Almeda Mall<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n

          • Plano – 6209 W. Park Blvd. at the Shops at Willow Bend<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

            The complete timeline for these closures has not been confirmed yet either. However, according to the retailer’s official website, clearance sales had already begun in January and were expected to run for around 8-12 weeks.<\/p>\n

            Clearance sales at both Macy’s Backstage stores and Macy’s Furniture Galleries that are slated for closure were scheduled to begin in February. These sales would only last for about six weeks, however.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
