The boycott has been organized to last for a full week, ending on April 14. A portfolio of economic, political, and social grievances could be cited as the sparks that led to this protest against the retailer. Walmart is not the only retailer being targeted, however. Just last month, industry giants like Amazon and Nestle were also subject to blackout boycotts. What all of these retailers have in common is the decision to distance themselves from all Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policies as a result of President Trump’s executive decision in this regard.

Walmart was rather quick on the take and has already issued a statement regarding the matter.

What does Walmart have to say?

The retailer has issued a public response to this growing boycott which also happens to be the second boycott the retailer has faced this year alone.

“Serving communities is at the heart of Walmart’s purpose to help people save money and live better,” the company reiterated in a statement shared with Newsweek.

“As one of the largest corporate taxpayers in the country, not only do we pay our fair share, we are an economic force multiplier strengthening communities nationwide through job creation, supplier growth, and over $1.7 billion in cash and in-kind donations last year… We remain dedicated to earning the business of all Americans and giving our time and resources to causes that uplift and unite communities who rely on us every day.”

Why does this boycott matter?

Consumer-led boycotts have been on the rise lately as individuals chose to be significantly more conscious about where and how they spend their money. The week-long Walmart boycott is being organized by The People’s Union USA which is led by John Schwarz. According to Schwarz, this boycott is a stand against “corporate tax avoidance, inequality, and rising prices.”

“Walmart, just like the rest of them, has been a part of that problem,” he added in a video. The fact that Walmart is a low-cost retailer and has still been targeted for this movement truly highlights the ongoing debate of corporate accountability and consumer power. Through this boycott, Schwarz aims to pressure Walmart to pay its “fair share of taxes and improve treatment of workers and communities.”

We want these corporations to start paying their fair share of taxes so the American people can finally be relieved of the burden of federal income tax,” Schwarz said in an email to Newsweek. “This boycott is about showing them that we are the economy. We fund their success.”

The posts made on social media promoting this boycott has since amassed likes and views in the tens of thousands. If consumers are steadfast on this boycott, a real difference could be seen as it is slated to last a full week, unlike the February boycott which was only a 24 hour boycott and did not yield the intended results.

Schwarz full statement on the matter, as shared by email, is as follows, “We’re boycotting Walmart because they’ve become the symbol of everything that’s wrong with corporate power in this country… Our mission is simple, we want these corporations to start paying their fair share of taxes so the American people can finally be relieved of the burden of federal income tax. We’re also calling for real equality, across the board, without question. This boycott is about showing them that we are the economy. We fund their success. And we can shift our money to local businesses or simply choose not to shop at all, anytime we want. If they want our dollars, they need to start respecting the people who keep them in business.”

As of Monday, April 7, a boycott against big box retailer Walmart has been put in action by the The People’s Union USA.
