Despite the turmoil of the economy in recent months, warehouse club giant, Costco<\/a>, has still managed to do quite well for itself during a time where competitors are having to shut the doors of hundreds of their stores.<\/p>\n

This success could be attributed to its unique business model whereby shoppers need a membership card to gain access to the warehouses, or because the retailer simply will not sell a product if it cannot be sourced at a good price. Despite the company’s ethos of always offering the lowest possible price, the current ongoing pressure related to tariff hikes can only be avoided for so long. But what does Costco have to say regarding the matter?<\/p>\n

Will tariffs impact the price of goods at Costco?<\/h2>\n

With the regular updates and changes on tariff percentages that we have seen over the past few weeks, many retailers, even major ones, have begun to warn customers to brace themselves for potential price increases across a variety of departments. Some retailers have even been scrambling to find a solution to this issue by asking their Chinese suppliers to absorb the excess tariff related costs, however, these requests were not received kindly by the suppliers who are already operating on razor thin margins.<\/p>\n

Costco Wholesale, however, appears to maintaining its cool amidst the drama and company CEO Ron Vachris has confirmed that the wholesale has no plans to raise prices by much or make any other big changes.<\/p>\n

During the second quarter earnings call last month, Vachris shared that “Costco will be able to keep prices low and rise to this challenge by leveraging our global buying power, strong supplier relationships, and innovation.”<\/p>\n

“As we look ahead to the remainder of this fiscal year, headwinds from foreign exchange look likely to continue,” Vachris continued. “[It is] difficult to predict the impact of tariffs, but our team remains agile, and our goal will be to minimize the impact of related cost increases to our members.”<\/p>\n

Costco is known to get creative when put in a tight spot<\/h2>\n

When times are a bit troubling or uncertain, the warehouse giant always finds a solution to push through. Take the global shipping crisis in 2021 for example. In September 2021, the retailer opted to privately rent at least three container ships, along with “several thousand” containers to curb the shipping crisis when supply chains were in flux.<\/p>\n

In terms of more presently pressing matters, Vachris explained that “About a third of our sales in the U.S. are imported from other countries, and less than half of those are items coming from China, Mexico, and Canada.”<\/p>\n

Walmart is in a similar boat with the company confirming that around “two-thirds of its goods sold in the U.S. are domestically produced, assembled, or grown.” With regards to the new and increasing tariffs, UBS analyst Michael Lasser seems to be of the opinion that both Walmart and Costco “are expected to have the most resilient earnings outlook.”<\/p>\n

From a more focused financial perspective, Costco CFO Gary Millerchip has observed that shoppers are “focused now on quality, value, and newness,” due to the current state of the company. Essentially, it is not like members have stopped spending entirely, but rather they are being more conscious and intentional about what they purchase.<\/p>\n

According to Millerchip, members might potentially “even become more choiceful as the impact of some return of inflation and the potential impact of tariffs could flow through as well.”<\/p>\n

Costco only keeps around 4,000 SKUs in its warehouses at any given time and is regularly rotating the selection. As such, rather than implementing price increases due to tariffs, it is more likely that members will see a slump in terms of new product introductions in store– at least for the time being until things stabilize.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
