These services include virtual care programs and physical health clinics. One of the largest setbacks in healthcare in recent years has been the closure of these services.

Experts have cautioned that the loss of these vital services will lead to the emergence of “pharmacy deserts,” which are regions with little to no access to basic healthcare. People who live in such places will have to put up with more expensive healthcare and longer commutes.

The following four essential services are about to expire:

1. Health Clinics at Walmart

In five states, Walmart plans to close 51 of its physical Walmart Health centers. Its brief attempt to offer primary healthcare will come to an end with this. For checkups, dental care, X-rays, and the treatment of chronic illnesses, these health centers provided reasonably priced walk-in appointments.

These health centers have closed because their operations are no longer profitable due to growing operating expenses and low returns.

2. Virtual Care at Walmart

Walmart has terminated its telehealth program in addition to its physical health clinics. Patients could schedule virtual appointments through Walmart Virtual Care, allowing even those living in remote areas to receive medical care. Similarly, low return rates and growing operating costs led to the closure.

3. CVS Reducing ACA Coverage and Infusion Services

Additionally, CVS is cutting costs by discontinuing several Coram infusion services, which were essential for patients requiring home-based therapies. Furthermore, by 2026, CVS plans to remove Aetna, its insurance division, from the Affordable Care Act marketplace. In 17 states, about a million enrollees will need to look for other insurance.

As it continues its multi-year plan to close roughly 900 stores nationwide, CVS’s retail presence will also be impacted. It plans to transition to digital pharmacy services and a more compact, healthcare-focused format.

Communities that previously relied on nearby CVS pharmacies for prescription drugs and other basic medical needs will have less in-person access, even though this move might simplify operations.

4. Village MD Walgreens

After undergoing a significant reorganization, Walmart has shut down 160 VillageMD clinics and revealed larger plans to close about 1,200 retail locations over the course of the following three years. In order to stabilize the business after suffering significant financial losses, a $1 billion cost-cutting plan includes these closures.

Walgreens’ previous strategy of making significant investments in VillageMD with the goal of growing in-store primary care services is being reversed by this restructuring plan. Due to financial strains and growing operating expenses in a challenging retail climate, the company closed 160 VillageMD clinics in 2024.

To reach patients in 30 states by October, Walgreens is now concentrating more on virtual care offerings. “Walmart Health remains focused on delivering healthcare that is convenient, personalized to each patient, inclusive of multiple service lines, all delivered by a community-focused team of board-certified providers,” said Dr. David Carmouche, Walmart’s senior vice president of healthcare delivery.

Amazon Fills the Gap Left in Healthcare

Unexpectedly, Amazon is reviving its presence in healthcare while Walgreens, Walmart, and CVS are reducing their operations. To bolster its in-person and online primary care programs, the online retail giant announced a partnership with the Cleveland Clinic after acquiring One Medical in 2023.

Conclusion,

The Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens closures of four essential services point to a significant change in the retail healthcare market. These vital services are being lost at a time when medical expenses are rising and there is a growing doctor shortage.

Millions of Americans may suffer greatly as a result of Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens‘ covert termination of four essential services.
