America’s top retailers, such as Target and Walmart, are always busy with something new, exciting, and different for consumers. However, this change Target implemented will eventually lead to the loss of its consumers. It is expected that many of Target’s consumers will flee to one of its biggest rivals, Walmart, due to this change. The question is, what change will make consumers flee to its rival?<\/p>\n
As we are all familiar, the past few months have been burdensome for many companies, especially retailers. This is all due to the high tariff rate implemented by the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump. Earlier this he announced the sweeping of tariffs; the taxes companies have to pay to import goods from overseas. The sweeping of these tariffs occurred in several countries to encourage more local (United States) production. As a result of this, companies were forced to raise their prices on daily goods.<\/p>\n
According to President Trump, the high tariffs mean that there is a likelihood that the company would come into the United Stated and build a factor. He made this statement in an interview with Bloomberg News last year, October. This year in April he announced that there will be a 10% baseline tariff on majority of the United States imports. Consequently, the high tariffs went into effect by August 7, and it impacted dozens of the country’s trade partners.<\/p>\n
In addition, as this tariff policy is being implemented the, Target<\/a> and many other retailer giants in the United States are burdened. They made it known that the policy will have a potential domino effect on the functioning of their businesses.<\/p>\n According to the Chief Executive Officer of Target, Brian Cornell, the increase of tariffs could lead the retailer to “massive potential costs.” He further stated that the retailer has been working non-stop, to reduce the tariffs but the difficulty levels has been severely high. This is mainly due to President Donald Trump’s tariff rates. The CEO alluded to the fact that Target is a company that is committed to deliver quality and valuable products.<\/p>\n He said that the retailer is continue with its focus on supporting American families as they try to manage their budgets. He mentioned that the company has several levers that could be used to mitigate the impact of the tariff, and the increase of price is the last resort. In addition, a BofA analyst stated that the high import exposure would force Target to increase the prices of its products. These price increase<\/a> will have to be twice the rate of Walmart’s prices, to top the retailer’s rival, to address the impact of the tariffs.<\/p>\n Analysts also made an estimation that Target would need to raise the prices of its products by about 8% on average. This is to completely offset tariffs in the fiscal year of 2027. On the other hand, the retail giant Walmart, only needs a potential 4% to 5% price increases.
