Retailers were forced to increase the prices of their products because of the increased tariff rates implemented by President Donald Trump. Some of the products that were affected are eggs, chicken, and beef, among many others. Both retail stores and consumers are affected by these high product prices.

Impact on grocery shopping

Since food is an essential item, many consumers are now struggling to provide themselves and their families with essential items, leaving them with checkout shocks. All this is due to the high prices of products, that has been implemented on imported goods. When Donald Trump took office in January, the prices of grocery items continued to rise. It has been stated that the Federal forecasts indicate a continuous rise in inflation for daily used items like eggs and beef.

This was supported by the USDA Economic Research Services that indicated overall grocery prices increase for the rest of the year, and it will continue in 2026. Many people spend most of their income on food and therefore this is a major concern. When grocery bills are high it will eventually influence the public perception of the country’s economy. It also impacts the consumer’s behaviour and the administration’s performance.

According to a poll that was conducted by the Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, the findings showed that a large percentage of American citizens stress because of the costs of groceries, and the constant checkout shocks. On the other hand, retailers found that many consumers changed from their regular brand to cheaper brands and in smaller sizes. As indicated by the Poll, about 53 percent of respondents stated that the price of groceries is a big stressor.

Consumers experience checkout shocks

As mentioned, the prices of products are expected to continuously rise. This means that consumers will continuously receive checkout shocks when it comes to the prices of products. The federal forecast and private trackers indicated that there is a modest overall easing, and price increase in various food staples. This, after a Trump campaigned on promises of a possibility of the lowering of the costs of groceries.

In addition, it was found that there was an increase of 0.3 percent from May 2025 to June 2025 on the all-food Consumer Price Index (CPI). These checkout shocks of consumers were reported by the USDA Economic Research Service. It further alluded to the fact that there was an overall rise in food prices by 2.9 percent and expected 2.7 percent in 2026.

The public’s opinion

During the campaign of President Donald Trump, he started that when he wins the election, he will decrease the prices of products. However, the prices of several good has been increase especially the imported goods as confirmed hy Thompson. Kevin Thompson is the CEO of 9i Capital Group and the host of the 9innings podcast.

He further alluded to the fact that that current administration is continuing with the high tariff rates increases and that the immigration policy has an effect on the labour cost. Additionally, he stated that the largest drivers of the price of food are the weather, disease, and global supply chain issues, and not immigration directly. Thompson told Newsweek that “Going forward, unless there’s a consistent and predictable tariff policy, shoppers should expect continued price volatility. Once markets adjust to a clear set of rules, prices may stabilize, but likely at a higher level than before.”

In addition, Alex Beene, the financial literacy instructor for the University of Tennessee at Martin, told Newsweek that, the inflationary pressures that was there before 2025 remained the same, where many daily used items have increased. Therefore, the pricing structure seems to be a prevailing problem. Due to this, consumers are experiencing checkout shocks and this will not stop overnight.

Over the past few weeks, many American consumers experienced a checkout shock when it came to the price increase on specific products.
