Amazon Prime is known for its benefits, but it will now have changed rules that need to be adhered to. The retailer will restrict the prime benefits that have been in operation for 15 years. As a result of this, non-household members can no longer benefit from the sharing of the e-commerce invitee program.

Details of the change

E-commerce giant Amazon ended its 15-year-old Invitee program, which allowed members to share their shipping benefits with other non-household contacts. For many years, members were allowed to share their information with those who do not necessarily live in proximity to them. Now, a whole change will be implemented that will no longer benefit outside members.

Amazon Prime’s free shipping perk will now be restricted to household members only. This new change will only be officially implemented by next month, October. This will occur as the shopping juggernaut phases out the “Prime Invitee program.”

In addition, the program, which allowed Amazon Prime members to share their shipping benefits with people outside their household will come to an end. According to the company’s website, these members who receive the shipping benefits does not necessarily have a membership, will end on October 1.

The end of Amazon’s invitee program

One of the spokespersons of Amazon confirmed to the FOX Business, that the company is ending the Invitee program. This program was launched in 2009, and it focused on its advertising on the Amazon Family program. This family program also includes allowing members to share several membership benefits with one other adult in their household. Additionally, up to four teens can also be added before April 7, 2025, and up to four profiles for children.

In addition, these benefits include fast and free delivery on Prime eligible products, providing access to exclusive Prime events and deals. It also includes the Prime Video, Prime Reading and the also access to third-party benefits like Grubhub. The e-commerce powerhouse did not make known of any specific figures for its Prime membership in the company’s recent earnings call. However, the company described the last Prime Day sale, that started in July 2025, as the company’s “biggest Prime Day shopping event yet.”

The Prime Day Event

The e-commerce giant made a post in a July blog after the two-day shopping bonanza. The post stated that, “this year’s Prime Day event was bigger than any previous four-day period that included a Prime Day event, with record sales and more items sold during the four days.” The company also stated that independent sellers, which are mostly small and medium-sized businesses, also achieved record sales and a record number of items sold.

Ticker

Security

Last

Change

Change %

AMZN

AMAZON.COM INC.

225.99

+0.65

+0.29%

In addition, Amazon has charged an annual fee of about $139 specifically for the company’s Prime membership in the United Stated since 2022. It can be stated that this is a massive increase from the company’s previous cost of about $119 a year.

However, Doug Anmuth, who is the J.P.Morgan Analyst, stated that it was indicated that the company should increase the membership for next year. In this research note he further alluded to the fact that the bank thinks that the Seattle-based e-commerce giant, Amazon, should increase the price of the company’s popular Amazon Prime membership in 2026.

This will be a shocker for many who have been using this Amazon Prime Invitee Program for many years. Also, it serves as a method to encourage more people to form part of the Amazon Membership to ensure they receive these benefits. Hopefully, this will work in the company’s favour, since there is a lot of benefits that comes with being a member of the e-commerce giant.

One of the powerhouse retailers, Amazon, is busy with something that may seem shocking to many.
