Therefore, the rules for these products officially changed, and consumers can expect to get what they were asking for. The retailer decided to ban some of the ingredients that are contained in the products it sells. Examples of these ingredients that are banned are high fructose corn syrup and 40 other ingredients.

Details behind the change

This change that Sam’s Club is currently implementing is something that its members asked for. There are no denying consumers what they want if the retailer wants to satisfy their needs. Consumers are currently much more in tune with the ingredients that products contain before they make a decision to purchase a product. In fact, Sam’s Club asked its consumers, and 72 percent responded that they are “actively seeking” foods that are minimally processed. So, the warehouse store is giving consumers just what they asked for with minimal processed food.

Costco is now on a mission to provide consumers what they are asking for by reevaluating the ingredients used in the retailer’s private label products. On the other hand, the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is putting pressure on companies to ban synthetic food dyes. These dyes include colours such as Citrus Red No. 2, Orange B, and Red No. 40. There was also an attempt to ban Red Dye No. 3 and is now busy to speed up that process. Although these dyes were banned the retailer also announced that it is removing an additional 40 ingredients from its products.

The removal of 40 ingredients in Costco products

In 2022, The retailer made an important announcement about 11 goals that the retailer has. These goals have a focus on keeping the retailer’s members and the planet in mind, with the hopes to achieve this by the year 2025. In addition, one of these goals the company has was its “Made Without” initiative. This initiative states that, “We aspire for 100% of our products to be free from ingredients on our ‘made without’ list by 2025.”

Moreover, on June 5, the Costco reported that 96 percent of the retailer’s Member’s Mark products meet the “made without” goals. This “made without” list the company has contains dozens of ingredients that Sam’s Club plans to be remove or replace from all its products. Some of these ingredients are:

artificial flavors,

aspartame,

high fructose corn syrup, a

certified synthetic colors and

FD&C colors.

However, Sam’s Club is definitely not the first retailer to invoke this initiative for its private label products. Other retailers such as Aldi and Trader Joe’s also banned several ingredients in the past for private label products. These banned ingredients include items such as:

artificial flavors

dyes,

monosodium glutamate (MSG), and g

genetically modified ingredients (GMOs).

The retailer’s shelves

As the retail giant, Sam’s Club, is continuously busy to simplify its Member’s Mark ingredients list, the store is highlighting a “first-to-market” product that is highlighted by the “Made Without” lineup. This is the Member’s Mark Star Cutout Cookies, which it released this summer. These cookies were red, white, and blue and dyed with vegetable juice, annatto extract, and spirulina extract rather than made with synthetic food dyes.

In addition, at a recent visit to Sam’s Club’s HQ, it was stated that the brand told Allrecipes that any new products hitting the shelves for the remainder of the year will not use any of its ingredients that were banned. Additionally, the club store has been hard at work to reformulate the previous fan-loved products such as the Member’s Mark Peppermint Almonds; to follow it made without guidelines. Hopefully it will succeed in doing so.

The retail chain, Sam’s Club, decided to change the ingredients of the products it sells in its various stores.
