We all know that the fourth industrial revolution highlights the technology era and the period where aspects like Artificial Intelligence (AI) become prominent. As AI becomes more prominent, more changes are occurring. One of these changes is the way we used to recruit individuals. America’s retail giant changed the way the company hires employees and is focused on implementing AI in this process.

Details behind this Walmart change

Walmart’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) issued an ominous warning to the United States employees, stating that AI will be the reason why every single job will be changed. The CEO, Doug McMillon, added that this is the case because the retail giant, Walmart, is planning to automate more positions. The plan of the retailer also includes keeping the size of its workforce flat over the next few years.

Artificial intelligence (AI) will get rid of some currently existing jobs and tasks at the country’s largest private employer. However, even if this is the case, the aim is to create a few new ones. McMillon confirmed this during the week at a conference with executives from other companies at Walmart’s Bentonville, Ark., headquarters. He also stated that “Maybe there’s a job in the world that AI won’t change, but I haven’t thought of it.”

The retailer’s use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Walmart has been busy building AI chatbots, which are referred to as “agents.” These agents can aid customers, suppliers, and employees with questions. However, it is essential to note that not every AI advancement is suitable for the company. Various companies have pitched robot employees.

For example, McMillon said during the conference to Walmart, “Until we’re serving humanoid robots and they can spend money, we’re serving people,” he said. “We are going to put people in front of people.” The retail giant, Walmart, has started using AI to track certain parts of the company’s supply chain and to obtain data on product trends.

Furthermore, in July, the company hired Daniel Danker, who is an executive at Instacart. His main role is to manage these AI ambitions. A key part of Danker’s job also involves working with Morris to decide how retailers’ workforce should shift over time. According to executives, the company has already cut some jobs such as it automated numerous of its warehouses with the use of AI.

Now, the company is planning to automate some back-of-store tasks as well. It also created a new “agent builder” role last month to hire employees who has the ability to build AI agent tools. Also, Walmart is planning to hire some more human employees in home delivery and the company’s consumers positions. These positions include roles such as bakeries, and it has added more in-store maintenance technicians and truck drivers in recent years.

However, AI-related changes are on their way, even though it will be occurring gradual, as confirmed by McMillon. He added that customer service roles in call centers and online chat rooms, will quickly become more AI-dependent, while it will take longer for other tasks.

The impact AI will have

Some of the executives from other companies such as Ford, JPMorgan Chase and Amazon have already issued ominous warnings about the potential AI has to slam the workforce. That impact has been a top concern for Walmart executives.

The executive of the retail giant has been discussing the possible role of AI during nearly every high-level meeting. The company has also been focused on tracking which job types decrease, increase and remain steady. This is to gauge where additional training can assist with the preparation of employees for AI’s onslaught.

As we live in the fourth industrial revolution, Walmart is becoming more adaptable.
