The retail giant has been trying its best not to increase the prices of products because management knows how it will impact the consumers. Many other retailers have been increasing the prices of imported products, not because they want to, but because they had no other choice.

Details about the prices at Walmart

Walmart stated that the company has been able to mitigate many of the tariff costs thus far. However, the costs of tariffs are rising every week, and it will continue to do so throughout the rest of this year. Many of the world’s largest retailers, such as Home Depot and Target, had to raise prices on some items.

Many other retailers had no other choice but to increase the prices of products. The retailers tried to work with a strategy like increasing the prices of some of the imported products, while keeping prices down on others. Walmart indicated that the retailer’s top back-to-school products were even cheaper this year than last year.

Still, the Trump administration’s tariffs on literally all imports loom big for all retailers who are witnessing that the cost of goods are increasing. Previously, when President Trump was threatening about the tariffs being increased up to 145% on Chinese imports, Walmart drew his ire by stating that it would lead to higher prices.

It has been found that retailers and manufacturers have avoided massive price increases for two key reasons. The first reason is the fact that the tariffs were rolled out much slower than originally threatened, and the second reason is that companies have stockpiled goods ahead of time. This week, TJX, which is the parent company of the discount clothing stores T.J.Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods, stated that it had bought up more inventory than usual to be well-stocked for months.

The CEO’s brutal new warning

On Thursday, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Walmart Doug McMillon, said that his company’s costs keep climbing. He further added on an earnings call that, “We’ve continued to see our costs increase each week, which we expect will continue into the third and fourth quarters.”

Walmart continues to attract more higher-income consumers looking for deals, McMillon said. He added that where some products experienced a price increase, middle- and lower-income consumers in particular sometimes switched or skipped those purchases. However, he alluded to the fact that tariffs have not prompted “dramatic shifts” in shopping behavior. The CEO stated that, “The impact of tariffs has been gradual enough that any behavioral adjustments by the customer have been somewhat muted.”

Overall inflation impact on the U.S. retailers

Consumers keep spending at stores and restaurants overall. Walmart’s sales in the United States grew by 4.6% in the latest quarter. On Tuesday Home Depot stated that the company’s Unites States sales in the three months that ended August 3, increased by 1.4%. This was much more than earlier this year.

This home-improvement chain stated that people moved on to focus on smaller projects, while they are delaying larger renovations. One of the main reasons why they are doing this, is largely because they worry about where the economy is headed.

As stated by Home Depot Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ted Decker, “The number one reason for deferring the large project is general economic uncertainty that is larger than prices of projects, of labor availability, all the various things we’ve talked about in the past. By a wide margin. Economic uncertainty is number one.” In addition, this week it has been explained that some prices did have to increase slightly, given tariff rates are “significantly higher” now than they were in the spring.

The continuous increase in tariffs is affecting several companies, including Walmart.
