For this reason, consumers should rather ignore what they see online and should rather focus on what is changing in the stores. Over the past few weeks, the retail giant implemented several changes as a way to attract foot traffic.

Details behind these rumors

The question many may ask is whether Walmart will be closed on November 1, 2025. These rumors are connected to the SNAP benefit cuts, ‘thefts,’ and Walmart is closing its stores.

The rumors that the retail giant will be closing stores stem from at least two viral social media videos from @uncutrealness and @kevallkavon. These videos gained combined views of over 1.7 million on October 28, 2025. These likely fueled heightened fears about the fact that SNAP and WIC benefits were facing cuts during the government shutdown.

In addition, Walmart is one of the largest grocery retailers that is processing SNAP EBT transactions. These are cards that are similar to debit cards that can be used to buy food and other basic necessities. According to the Newsweek reports, Walmart accounts for 24% of SNAP consumers’ total spending,

Moreover, people may wonder what SNAP is and it is essential to clarify this. SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which is a federal program that provides low-income families with various monthly benefits to afford healthy food. These benefits that they receive are known as food stamps. As stated by the USDA, the SNAP benefits are provided for about 42 million people in the United States.

Will Walmart stores be closed?

The quick and simple answer to this question is “no.” The retailer will not be “locking” their doors nor are any Walmart stores closing their doors on November 1, 2025. This will not happen due to any reasons which are related to the government shutdown, any SNAP cuts, or any alleged rumors of planned thefts or loots. One of the spokespersons of Walmart told Snopes this week that the retailer will remain open for business on November 1, 2025. It is safe to say that these claims about being closed has been entirely misunderstood.

There have been unverified social media claims that has been making its rounds and providing false information to people online. These claims have been fed by two now-viral videos from users @uncutrealness and @kavellkavon. Both these videos made claims about the SNAP beneficiaries, or that those who use food stamps, had “threatened” to loot Walmart.

For this reason, the retail giant had allegedly made an announcement that it had to close its stores and revert to online only shopping for all consumers. Also, to add to this, this online shopping would then only include parking lot pickup. It is important to note that these claims are unverified, and that Snopes attempted to reach out to both users, with no response on October 28, 2025.

SNAP Benefits

The problem that people may be thinking about now is whether the SNAP benefits will be issued on November 1, 2025. The USDA made a statement in a letter which is dated October 10, 2025. In this letter it was stated that there will not be enough funding to remunerate the entire SNAP benefits in November if the shutdown continues.

Therefore, millions of people are at risk of losing essential food assistance. It is crucial to note that while benefits are funded at the federal level, it is the responsibility of each state for distributing those benefits to residents. That means that if one state makes an announcement about delays, cuts, or schedule changes, the announcement will only apply to those individuals who are living in that specific state.

One of America’s top retailers, Walmart, has made the headlines about a rumor that there is a possibility that the retailer may go dark.
