It seems the store closure train has made a stop at yet another company — this time it is big box retail chain, Best Buy who is closing the shutters of its store in the coming days. The Evanston branch of Best Buy will now be following in the footsteps of its retail peers such as Walmart and Macy’s, and is set to close in its doors in later this year, in March.

Another one bites the dust

According to a sign posted outside the popular big box electronics chain retailer, it will be closing the doors of its location at 2301 Howard St. on March 1. The sign reads, “its not goodbye, it’s see you around”. This news was confirmed by a Best Buy employee in a comment made to the Round Table.

The posted sign also includes a list of alternative locations that customers may use to fulfill their electronic needs. As per the sign, Best Buy at 5425 W. Touhy Ave. in Skokie and at 4100 N. Harlem Ave. in Norridge will remain open. The sign also provides QR codes that lead to alternate shopping options such as the online store, remaining locations, and requesting at-home consultations.

What is Best Buy’s best plan of action for the future of the business?

The company has stated that it is doing everything it can to ensure the employees at the Howard St. location find job at other locations and within the company.

In an earnings call in February 2024, the company had reached the conclusion that closing down several stores was the first step towards changing its approach to business. This appears to be a common trend amongst retailers across the industry as of late.

At the time of the call, the company had already closed 24 of its stores, with plans with close a further 10 to 15 next year. However, Evanston has not yet seen the last of Best Buy in the area. The company plans to test not only closing these large-format stores, but trying to open smaller-format stores nearby, according to a statement made by Chief Executive Officer Corie Barry on the same call. Barry hopes this could retain some customers from the original store.

Another change made by the company is an updated version of their app. The app now offers a number of new services for customers who opt to shop online through their phones.

Electronics in Evanston

The search for electronics in Evanston may have just become a little bit more difficult, depending on how niche your needs are. Evanston’s Target locations at 2209 W. Howard St. and 1616 Sherman offer electronics departments, however, since this is a multipurpose store, the selection there will not be anywhere near as specialized and wide as that of a Best Buy.

Evanston does, however, offer several phone company stores with available stock, like T-Mobile at 1701 Sherman Ave., AT&T at 1620 Chicago Ave., Boost Mobile at 331 Howard St. and 845 Dodge Ave. and Verizon at 2516 Green Bay Road and 313 W. Howard St.

In addition to this, there are approximately two electronic repair stores with store inventory similar to Best Buy’s Geek Squad. These are MicroRepair at 1314 Chicago Ave. and GadgetWorks Repair Center at 1636 Orrington Ave.

Best Buy is not the only store saying bye to Evanston. The 2722 Green Bay Road location of Office Depot has also shut its doors just recently. Whilst the spot still remains vacant, it is being eyed by grocery chain, Aldi who is looking to open a second location in Evanston.

This is perhaps some good news for the retail industry after 2025 kicked off with a string of stores across companies closing various branches, citing underperformance as the reason.
