Toyota, a motor company known for their solid engines, is determined to cater to car enthusiasts with fascinating engineering that will produce great speeds and power.

How is Toyota elevating the motor industry?

The motor company is debuting a 2.0 liter turbo engine and according to Chief Technology Officer, Hiroki Nakajima, the new four-cylinder engine lineup is a game changer. Powertrains with a 1.5- and 2.0- liter displacement will soon hit the market. These engines are primarily being optimized for electrification but is still maintaining a fun element. Last year, engineers mounted this 2.0- liter turbo engine to a stripped-out Lexus IS for testing purposes. This four-cylinder unit also boasts a mounting ability that can be both transverse and longitudinal.

The four-pot was installed in a mid-engine test mule based on a GR Yaris for the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon. Toyota did not share the 2.0-liter turbo engine’s output during the press released but hinted that it could make over 400 horsepower to in an interview with Japanese journalists at TAS. Nakajima also shared that the target is 400 PS which technically works out to 394 hp at the Multipathway Workshop help in May last year — and there seems to be room for more.

Nakajima suggested the engine could pack an even greater punch at the 2025 TAS. When asked by a reporter, he simply responded with, “Is it a 400-PS engine?” Whilst this could mean less than the original estimate made by Toyota, the original version already had 400 PS when shown last year. A peak torque of 369 pound-feet (500 Newton meters) was estimated in 2024. Based on this, more rather than less can be expected.

It should be noted that a 2.0 liter four cylinder turbo engine with more than 400 hp is not exactly as unique as it sounds. AMG’s “M139” makes 416 hp in the “45”-badged cars. When longitudinally mounted in the hugely controversial C63, the “M139l” produces a massive 469 hp. Additionally, whilst being full of engine mods, the rare Mitsubishi Evo X FQ-440 MR had 440 hp a decade ago.

Future plans for the company

A lesser version of the 2.0 liter turbo engine is in the works with a projected output of 300 PS (296 hp) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm), Nakajima shared with Car Watch. The unrestricted four-cylinder mill will make more than 600 hp in race cars. This engine can be installed both transversely and longitudinally.

Toyota already uses a 2.0-liter turbo four-banger in a sports car via BMW and its B48 engine, though this may not be the case for long. The near future will see the current Supra being retired, but the nameplate will continue on. We do not yet know if the next gen Supra will feature the “G20E”.

The company has been consistently dropping hints about dusting off other sports car nameplates. There are occasional signals about the return of the Celica and the MR2. Although, logically speaking, the G20E is most likely to be at the core of the company’s sports car lineup.

The new engine will be positioned above the three-cylinder 1.6-liter unit found in the GR Yaris and GR Corolla. The “G16E-GTS” also powers a Lexus model, so here’s hoping Toyota’s luxury brand will also use the larger 2.0-liter, according to Motor 1.

Despite existing in an SUV-centric world, while battling stricter emission regulations in the automotive industry, Toyota is still determined to cater to enthusiasts. Lexus is also cooking its own fun little car and it will feature a much larger engine. The unconfirmed name is the LFR and it is believed to have a twin-turbo V-8 and serve as a street-legal sibling of Toyota’s new GT3 race car.

Innovation is coming straight out of Japan, this time its in the form of a game changing turbo engine.
