The retail industry is a massively competitive one and yet popular big box retail chain, Walmart<\/a>, has managed to stand out amongst its peers for a number of mostly good reasons. The retailer offers its customers a variety of shopping experiences from grocery stores to hypermarkets to department stores, and all at a competitive, discounted rate. The retailer also offers pharmacy services, along with financial services through its MoneyCenter.<\/p>\n

Who owns this multinational brand?<\/h2>\n

Walmart, one of the most renowned superstore chains in America, is actually a public company and is listed on the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange). Stats about the company can be found under the symbol of WMT on the stock exchange. This means that the company is publicly traded and exists independently without any parent company meaning anyone with investment capital could invest in company shares through the financial markets.<\/p>\n

A breakdown of current shareholders and ownership<\/a> would reveal the most significant portion of shares being held by the Walton family. The Walton family are the progeny of the company founder so it would make sense that they still hold a high portion of shares.<\/p>\n

The family has a fair amount of influence over strategy and operations since their shares total to around 47%. These shares are held through their various enterprises such as Walton Family Holdings Trust and Walton Enterprises.<\/p>\n

The remaining percentage of shares is spread across various investors. The most notable investors who also hold a significant share are BlackRock and Vanguard Group who are financial institutions. The major shareholder position of these institutes comes as a result of their pensions and investments.<\/p>\n

Since the company can be publicly traded, it is able to maintain a continuous rate of growth and global expansion, all while still maintaining the founder’s values of accessibility and customers service that earns Walmart its reputation.<\/p>\n

Walmart’s CEO<\/h2>\n

After three decades with Walmart Inc., Carl Douglas McMillon is currently serving as the company CEO. The CEO, more commonly referred to as Doug McMillon, took up this position as of February 1, 2014. Today, he is the CEO but 30 years prior, McMillon started his career with the company in a distribution warehouse as an associate. Thirty years of work and climbing the ladder to several key positions has led him to where he is today.<\/p>\n

McMillon proved his adaptability against diverse markets during his time leading the Walmart International and Sam’s Club divisions prior to being named CEO. He oversaw massive transformations within the company over the many years he spent there.<\/p>\n

During McMillon’s earlier years in a leadership position, he put into effect a wage raise for hourly employees. To implement this, he allocated $2.7 billion to ensure their working conditions were improved. 40% of workers across the United States were impacted by this.<\/p>\n

In recent years, he has invested $1 billion towards bettering the company’s e-commerce system. This happened in 2015 and resulted in the creation of an integrated shopping experience.<\/p>\n

Business processes aside, McMillon has also shown a great commitment to sustainability. This is seen through his implementation of LED lighting in stores, along with a focus on renewable energy sources. In terms of social issues, the company has also taken some strong stances. For example, in 2015, McMillon made the decision to discontinue the sale of semi-automatic weapons. This decision was followed up with an end to handgun ammunition sales in 2019.<\/p>\n

History<\/h2>\n

The retail chain was founded on July 2, 1963 by Sam Walton in Roger, Arkansas. The chain initially focused on small communities but soon went public in 1970. Walmart’s first year in business yielded an impressive $12 million in sales. This is perhaps due to Walton’s odd habit of flying a small plane across towns to find the best locations for his stores.
