The economic bloc, which takes its name from the acronym of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, issued a joint communiquรฉ to summarize the axes addressed at the summit. They expressed a unified repudiation of the attacks against Iran and the new tariff policies imposed by Donald Trump. Xi Jingpin and Vladimir Putin were the major absentees at the annual summit.
The BRICS communiquรฉ
As part of the BRICS summit, the economic bloc initially formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, but which since 2024 has expanded to include Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Indonesia and Iran, the heads of state and government of the participating nations issued a joint communiquรฉ, which provides a glimpse of the positions and consensus reached during the talks.
The communiquรฉ, published on Sunday afternoon, expresses the strong support of the economic bloc to Iran and Russia and, at the same time, strongly condemns the tariffs imposed by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, as well as the attacks on the Islamic Republic of Iran, without pointing out those responsible.
โWe condemn the military attacks against the Islamic Republic of Iran since June 13, 2025, which constitute a violation of international law and the UN Charter,โ the statement said, without making direct reference to the United States or the State of Israel, which carried out and supported the operations that bombed research facilities in Iranian territory.
Along these lines, they expressed their โdeep concern with the subsequent escalation of the security situation in the Middle East and urge the United Nations Security Council to address this issueโ.
The dispute over the 12-day war
The โcondemnationโ of the military offensive carried out by the United States and Israel was one of the most discussed topics within the BRICS, since the economic bloc is made up of both historical allies of the White House and its main military and commercial rivals, including the target of the bombings.
On the one hand, countries such as India, the United Arab Emirates and South Africa proposed to qualify the vocabulary when referring to the bombings that fell on Iranian soil. These three countries have maintained good diplomatic relations with the United States throughout history, being important strategic and commercial partners in crucial parts of the world, such as the Middle East, Asia and southern Africa.
On the other side, Brazil, China, Russia and Iran itself (a full member of the BRICS since 2024), took a tougher stance on the latest U.S. military activities. However, in favor of reaching consensus, they agreed to use more vague terminology in their statements of repudiation.
โSafeguards and nuclear safety must always be respected, even in armed conflict, to protect people and the environment from harm,โ they added.
Cessation of hostilities and condemnation of attacks against Russia
In the same communiquรฉ, the BRICS members called for an โimmediate ceasefireโ and the โcomplete withdrawalโ of the Israeli army from the Gaza Strip.
โWe call upon the parties to engage, in good faith, in further negotiations to achieve an immediate, permanent and unconditional ceasefireโ and โthe full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip and all other parts of the Occupied Palestinian Territories,โ the communiquรฉ explains.
Elsewhere in the joint text, they referred to the attacks on railway lines in Russia committed last month, events that Moscow attributed to sabotage ordered from Kiev.
โWe condemn in the strongest terms the attacks on bridges and railway infrastructure that deliberately targeted civilians in the Bryansk, Kursk and Voronezh regions of the Russian Federation on May 31, June 1 and June 5, 2025, resulting in several civilian casualties, including children,โ the statement said.
