Store closures are rampant across the United States in recent months and Macy’s, the popular department store chain, has also fallen victim to this apparent trend. Well over fifty of the company’s stores are set to close in the coming months but what does this mean for the future of the business and its customers?
Can a “bold new chapter” undo recent underperformance?
The coming days will see an end to 64 Macy’s stores across the country. The department store chain is referring to these closures as the opening of their “Bold New Chapter” strategy for the company. This new strategy is designed to return the company to profitability. Macy’s is of the belief that closing down underperforming stores and shifting focus and presumably funds to profitable branches is the way forward.
However, no matter how you spin the optics, a store closure is always a bad sign. Unfortunately, this is not an issue limited to Macy’s specifically. Since the rise of technology, followed by the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown, in-person retail has taken a major knock. People just prefer the convenience of online shopping in this day and age and it seems that this new norm is here to stay and the retail industry has no choice but to adapt.
Big liquidation sales for customers to benefit one last time from these 64 Macy’s
As sad as a store closure is for clients, the bittersweet news that often comes with it is a big clearance sale. The department store chain will soon begin liquidation sales at all of the locations that are set to close.
The 64 Macy’s stores that are closing will begin liquidation sales soon in late January. These sales will last for approximately eight to twelve weeks, depending on how long stocks last. Once each store depletes its stock, it will close for one final time, marking the end of that Macy’s location.
Branches of Macy’s Backstage and Macy’s Furniture Galleries, however, will only begin their sales in February. These liquidation sales are much shorter and only expected to last six weeks after they begin. Once this period passes, these stores too will be permanently closed down.
Regarding the closures, Macy’s CEO, Tony Spring, shared, “Closing a store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underperforming Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our state-of-the-art stores, where customers are already responding positively to enhanced product offerings and elevated service.”
Which stores will be permanently closing?
On January 9, 2025, Macy’s announced that 150 of its stores will be closed by January 30. Once this Bold New Chapter strategy comes into effect, the department chain will still have 350 operating stores.
Two stores, one in Colorado and one in Florida, have already closed. Whilst the full list of stores set to close has not yet been revealed, a list of 66 locations has been released.
