Over the past few months, several store closures have occurred, especially in the American retail industry. Numerous aspects should be taken into consideration when it comes to this big decision, to close stores. It is no secret that many retailers have been struggling for the past few years and in recent months. Now, two of the country’s most iconic chains are affected by the new waves of closures.
Details about the store closures
Both of these popular chains have been struggling to remain afloat and have already closed several stores. As stated by Macy’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tony Spring, it is never an easy decision to close down stores. He emphasised that the retailer is focused on closing the underproductive stores to ensure they have more time to prioritise necessary resources and investments. Unfortunately, the company did not manage to make certain stores more effective and therefore, the only way forward is for store closures to occur.
Moreover, according to the GlobalData Managing Director, Neil Saunders, JCPenney has been trying to reinvent itself since 2024. The reason for this is because it was another lost year for the retailer and nothing was done to indicate that the chain was on the road to success. When it comes to JCPenney, reasons such as expiring lease agreements, market conditions, and additional company reason have been indicated as some of the reasons for store closures.
