Ford is recalling 223,472 F-150 pickup trucks after finding that fuel tank straps can come loose while the truck is on the road. The recall was filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on September 9, 2026, under campaign number 26V578000.
What the defect is
The cause traces back to final assembly. The affected vehicles have front fuel tank straps that were tied to the way the straps were installed during production; the straps’ T-slots may not have been properly inserted into the vehicle frame rail. A number of unsecured fuel tanks affected F-150 vehicles built during periods when the vision systems that confirm proper assembly were not in continuous use at the assembly plants.
A detached tank can create a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash. In addition, a fuel leak can cause an engine stall or increase the risk of a fire, according to the NHTSA campaign record.
There may be no warning before the tank problem occurs, meaning owners should not assume that the absence of a dashboard warning or an obvious symptom means their truck is unaffected.
The risk is serious enough that it draws a direct parallel to an earlier fuel-system safety action. Earlier this year, a missing component inside 98 electric cargo vans created a fire and sudden power-loss risk, and federal regulators moved quickly there too before any injury was recorded.
Which trucks are covered
NHTSA documents describe the campaign as covering certain 2023 through 2027 model year F-150s built starting January 4, 2023, within specific VIN ranges. The affected population includes vehicles that remained unsold or had been in service for less than three months as of August 27, 2026, because Ford’s understanding of the issue and observed occurrences in the field indicate the condition will manifest very early in the vehicle’s lifetime.
Ford estimates that about 1 percent of the recalled vehicles carry the defect.
Ford began investigating in July after concerns about unsecured fuel tanks reached its Critical Concern Review Group. The company later found that affected trucks had been built during periods when camera systems used to verify installation of the fuel tank straps were not continuously in use.
As of August 27, 2026, Ford was aware of 16 warranty claims globally related to this condition. Ford said it is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this condition. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 21, 2026.
What dealers will do
Dealers will inspect and replace the fuel tank straps, as necessary, free of charge. Affected vehicle identification numbers were scheduled to become searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning September 14, 2026.
Owners should check their vehicle identification number rather than assume every F-150 from the affected model years is included. Recall campaigns apply to specific vehicles, so the VIN is the clearest way to determine whether a particular truck is covered.
Owners can search by VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls or contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332, referencing internal recall number 26S69.
Context for Ford
The F-150 is America’s best-selling vehicle, making any fuel-system campaign on the nameplate one of the higher-profile recall actions of the year. The targeted remedy, inspect every covered truck, then replace only the straps that require it, limits the financial exposure.
Ford has been investing heavily in its truck manufacturing base. The company announced plans to build a new $1 billion paint shop at its Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, its largest US manufacturing facility, with groundbreaking expected by late this year. That plant builds the F-Series Super Duty, Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator and is separate from the F-150 assembly operations covered by this recall.
The fuel tank recall, rooted in a lapse in assembly-line vision-system verification rather than a design flaw, is a distinct manufacturing-quality issue.
Notification to dealers occurred on September 14, 2026. Affected owners do not need to wait for the mailed notice; a VIN lookup on NHTSA’s recall portal will confirm status immediately.
