App spots fake IDs

Spotting a fake ID just became it little bit easier in North Carolina.
North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement has started using an app from Intellicheck called Age ID that scans driver’s licenses and sniffs out the phonies.
"Like every law enforcement agency across the country, we are dealing with advances in technology that are being leveraged to create high-quality fake and altered IDs,” said Terrance Merriweather, head of the state’s Alcohol Law Enforcement Branch. “Using traditional methods, these fake IDs are nearly impossible to tell apart from legitimate IDs.”
Using a mobile phone’s camera, Age ID users take a picture of the barcode on the back of a driver’s license. The app compares that image to the company’s library of barcodes -- from every U.S. state and territory, every Canadian province and every Mexican state -- to determine its legitimacy.
This solution was used in Mecklenburg County, N.C., ABC retail stores before being rolled out statewide.
Intellicheck’s Law ID service lets police authenticate a contact’s driver's licenses and other government-issued identification by scanning the barcode on the back of the card. The app checks the ID against Department of Motor Vehicles databases and other state and federal datasets and also alerts officers to outstanding warrants, BOLOS (be on the lookout warnings) and other critical information.
