Canadian Solar’s subsidiary e-STORAGE has secured a significant battery energy storage contract in Germany, marking another milestone in the company’s European expansion strategy. The 20.7 MW / 56 MWh DC energy storage project in Lower Saxony represents a crucial step toward strengthening Germany’s grid flexibility and renewable energy integration. This comprehensive agreement includes both equipment supply and a 20-year long-term service agreement, demonstrating the growing demand for reliable energy storage solutions across European markets.
Germany’s Energy transition spurs battery storage demand
Germany’s ‘energy transition’ remains a driver of huge opportunities for the sector’s battery-based energy storage system developers. Large-scale energy storage projects, as seen in the Lower Saxony project, remain indispensable in this regard. With over 1.7 GW of projects awaiting completion, as well as more than 7 GW of projects in its portfolio, investor Kyon Energy can safely be considered the leader in its space as the project’s EPC-M contractor.
Comments were also sought from Florian Antwerpen, the Managing Director of Kyon Energy, on the importance of battery storage solutions within the energy infrastructure evolution of Germany. “Large-scale battery storage solutions remain a decisive element of the energy transition in Germany as well as its energy security,” Antwerpen declared, adding that such solutions offer flexibility more effectively than any other solution that currently exists. Recently, the firm was acquired by TotalEnergies as of January 2024.
e-STORAGE will deliver and commission their integrated energy storage solution based on their SolBank technology, with shipment deliveries set to begin in March 2026, commissioning intended for later that year. An integrated solution will comprise long-term maintenance as well as performance services that will serve the purpose of system reliability for the entire lifetime of the project, demonstrating their concern for providing bankable technology services that will facilitate flexible grid infrastructure development within Europe.
European expansion strategy gets a push with strategic partnerships
Colin Parkin, the President of e-STORAGE, emphasized the importance of grid flexibility in the energy transition in Europe, as well as the growing importance of bankable assets in this respect. e-STORAGE remains committed to helping address this essential task in Germany as well as the Europe-wide area through responsible, long-term engagement with the relevant market. e-STORAGE’s project is a measure within the firm’s larger plans for establishing a positive footing within European energy storage markets.
e-STORAGE boasts completely automated, cutting-edge production facilities with a capacity of 10 GWh annually for battery energy storage systems, as well as 3 GWh for battery cells. e-STORAGE, through its parent, Canadian Solar, has cumulatively shipped more than 13 GWh of its battery energy solutions worldwide as of June 30, 2025, with a strong backlog of contracted business valued at a solid $3 billion.
“Flexibility of the grid system is a key aspect of the European energy transition, and bankable energy storage assets will increasingly play a big part within this. We remain committed to helping meet this need in Germany, as well as the wider European area, through responsible, long-term participation within the energy market.” – Colin Parkin, e-STORAGE President
Market leadership position strengthened through a proven track record
Canadian Solar’s wide-ranging strategy for energy storage solutions encompasses not only product delivery but, more comprehensively, EPC services as well as innovative solutions that seek to enhance the efficiency of the grid. Canadian Solar is one of the industry’s most bankable companies as a group, successfully delivering almost 165 GW of high-quality solar photovoltaic modules within the last 24 years, being one of the most established companies within the renewable industry since its listing on the prestigious NASDAQ in 2006.
This new contract with a German firm further cements e-STORAGE’s stance as a ‘Notified Body’ within the industry, offering utility-scale battery energy storage solutions, as well as helping Europe achieve its aim of being independent with regard to renewable energy. Completing this project will strongly aid Germany’s grid, as well as its renewables integration.
