Colombia is in mourning as the tragedy has struck the lives of the youth during their return from what could have been a mirthful celebration. The school bus that carried the graduates of the Antioqueño High School crashed in the early morning hours. The youth had earlier celebrated their impending graduation on a trip to the Caribbean coastal town of Tolu before their return to Medellin.
Graduation celebration becomes a horrifying tragedy
The students from the Liceo Antioqueño school, who were based in the town of Bello, had been celebrating their graduation achievement for a number of days in Tolú before they set off to return home on Sunday morning. The students took a group photo, which would turn out to be their last, before boarding the bus for the journey home. The accident took place some time around 5:40 local time along a known danger spot where “the rural northern part of El Chispero, between Remedios and Zaragoza, located in El Department of Antioquia, Colombia.”
Antioquia State’s governor, Andrés Julián Rendón, confirmed that “the bus dropped into an abyss on its way from Tolú to Medellín during yesterday’s early morning hours.”
Colombia’s hospital system activated its entire crisis response plan due to the large number of injured victims emanating from the accident scene. Injured victims were rushed to various hospitals, including institutions in Segovia, among other hospitals at Hospital San Vicente de Paúl in the municipality of Remedios, where doctors work tirelessly around the clock to save as many lives as possible among the victims, which include university students.
The bus drops 250 feet down the side of the cliff
This vehicle, carrying a bare minimum of 37 individuals, swerved off the cliff with a distance of some 250 feet, causing extensive damage and loss of some lives. It is also likely that the driver, named Johnatan Taborda Cocacolo, suffered a “microsleep,” which is a state where one sleeps for some 30 minutes because of extremely tiring conditions. “Loss and Regain of Awareness” refers to the loss followed by the eventual regaining of conscious recognition during the loss of consciousness. This can very well define the deviation of the car from the dangerous mountain road during the early morning hours, although the accident investigation is still being conducted by the National Road Safety Agency in Colombia to find the cause behind the tragic accident that shocked the entire nation.
“Currently, more than a dozen people have lost their lives, with a further 20 injured, and the entire hospital network has been activated in response to this crisis,” said Julián, the governor.
School community mourns unprecedented loss
Antioqueño High School has also posted a sorrowful message saying that it is with a deep sense of regret that they express sadness over what occurred to their students and families during what was supposed to be a celebration event. The school also mentioned that this event is not an activity that was organized by them, but was independently organized by the class of 2025. The promotion company that was supposed to take care of the victims, referred to as ‘Senior Prom Fest,’ has also issued a statement.
