DHS confirms new 2026 federal grant programs targeting drone threats and high-risk public events

Federal authorities have unveiled a groundbreaking initiative that could reshape how America protects its most vulnerable gatherings and critical infrastructure. The Department of Homeland Security and FEMA just announced a massive $500 million Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems grant program designed to combat rogue drone threats. This unprecedented funding represents the largest federal investment in state-level drone defense capabilities, signaling growing concerns about aerial security risks.

$500 Million Program Seeks to Address Surge in Drone Security Concerns

The Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems Grant Program is seen as a derivative of the โ€˜One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025.โ€™ This program provides critical support with regard to the acquisition of technologies aimed at the detection, identification, monitoring, and tracking of unmanned aircraft systems posing a threat to public safety. This program is aimed at targeting illegal activity related to drones posing a threat to Americans and critical infrastructure assets in the United States.

The need for drones has been noted by the Federal government, which acknowledges the change from toy drones used for recreation purposes to a potential threat against the nation’s security, an area of sophistication demanding an effective response strategy. The drones will serve a purpose with specific limitations and will be used within jurisdictions covered by Federal agencies defined in the U.S. Codes within Title 18 and Title 49.

Allocation of programme funds

  • Total available funds: 500 million over two fiscal years
  • Allocation for FY 2026: $250 million for priority states and regions
  • Allocation for FY 2027: $250 million for national distribution
  • Application deadline: December 5, 2025
  • Eligible recipients may include State, local, and territorial governments

FIFA World Cup and America 250 events will get priority financing

The 2026 budget cycle includes eleven states where the FIFA World Cup will take place, alongside the National Capital Region, which will host the America 250 celebration. Such special events have received Special Event Assessment Rating levels of 1 or 2; these levels represent the highest levels of Federal support in terms of security preparations. The priority recipients will be entitled to a minimum amount within the State Homeland Security Grants Program framework.

Additional awards will be given out within competition ratings related to the security of the events, as well as the merits of projects proposed by eligible governments. The remaining pool of 250 million will be allocated within Fiscal Year 2027 among the 56 states and regions, with FEMA intending to concentrate on developing a national capability related to drone detection and response.

Federal recognition of the drone threat landscape

This new grant program takes into consideration the realization by the federal government that unmanned aircraft systems present dynamic challenges for law enforcement agencies charged with ensuring the safety of large-scale gatherings and critical infrastructure assets against potential threats from drones used by civilians, including those with malicious intent. Some drones can be used for surveillance, cargo delivery, and malicious purposes, among other uses, with minimal risks on the part of the users.

Security specialists would have to deal with sophisticated technology being used in drones, which would be able to avoid being detected by ordinary means and would be functioning within restricted airspace. The grant assistance will allow local and State agencies access to the latest technologies available to combat drones, which would only be available to Federal agencies previously. This is a radical change in Americaโ€™s grassroots approach to its homeland security issues.

The Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems Grant Program offered by the DHS is a major step forward in the security policy of America, recognizing the reality of drone threats and the need for a coordinated response by the government, the states, and local administrations. With an investment of $500 million directed towards high-risk areas and the improvement of capabilities, America is set to meet new aerial security threats with these technologies.
