Fireworks AI, a platform enabling companies like Uber and Shopify to train and serve custom AI models, announced a $1.505 billion Series D round at a $17.5 billion valuation on July 16, 2026, according to the official Business Wire release.

The raise is one of the largest single venture rounds of the year for an AI infrastructure company and lands less than nine months after the company was valued at a fraction of that figure.

Round size and investors

The round was led by Atreides Management, Index Ventures, and TCV, with participation from existing investors Evantic, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and NVIDIA.

Additional investors include 20VC, Bessemer Venture Partners, Insight Partners, Lone Pine Capital, Menlo Ventures, Operator Collective, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, Original Capital, Prysm Capital, Quantum Capital, and TIME Ventures.

The deal priced above the roughly $15 billion valuation Fireworks had initially sought, once investor demand became clear.

The Series D came nine months after Fireworks’ $250 million Series C in October 2025 at a $4 billion post-money valuation. A jump of that magnitude in under a year is unusual even by 2026 AI-funding standards.

Revenue and scale milestones

Fireworks has surpassed $1 billion in annualized revenue run rate, up 5x year-over-year from its last funding round. Daily token volume on the platform has grown from 15 trillion to more than 40 trillion.

Of the tokens processed on the platform, 95% come from models customers have customized on their own data, not off-the-shelf frontier models.

That figure is central to the company’s pitch: enterprises are increasingly moving away from renting access to general-purpose frontier models and instead building AI tuned to their own workflows and data.

Fireworks co-founder and CEO Lin Qiao has said the company’s cost advantage over equivalent closed models is a key driver of growth, with the platform positioned as significantly cheaper than equivalent-quality closed alternatives.

Customer base and competition

In late 2022, Qiao and six co-founders departed Meta to establish Fireworks AI. The founding team included Dmytro Dzhulgakov, a core maintainer of the PyTorch framework; Dmytro Ivchenko, who led PyTorch development for ranking systems at Meta; James Reed, who worked on the PyTorch compiler; Chenyu Zhao, formerly the Google Vertex AI lead; Benny Yufei Chen, who ran advertising infrastructure at Meta; and Pawel Garbacki. Lin Qiao previously served as a Senior Director of Engineering at Meta, where she led development of AI frameworks and platforms, notably PyTorch. Fireworks offers infrastructure that lets enterprises fine-tune general-purpose models on their own data and serve them in production.

Customers include Uber, Shopify, Doximity, Elastic, GitLab, and MongoDB. Legal AI company Harvey and coding tool Cursor have also built on the platform.

Fireworks competes with Together AI and Baseten in the AI inference cloud market. The company plans to deepen partnerships with cloud partners including Microsoft and NVIDIA using the new funding.

The Microsoft tie-in is a meaningful distribution lever, given that Microsoft 365 Copilot reached 20 million paid enterprise seats by the end of Q3 FY26, up from 15 million one quarter earlier, putting a large pool of corporate buyers within reach of the platform.

The funding lets Fireworks AI expand its compute infrastructure and grow its engineering team.

What the round signals for AI infrastructure

Rising costs for the latest AI models have made finance executives increasingly uneasy, prompting them to steer employees toward open-source options. Fireworks sits squarely in that trend, offering a layer that takes open models and makes them enterprise-ready without the per-token pricing of closed alternatives.

The round reflects a broader pattern in venture capital this year, with AI infrastructure bets drawing particular attention because they sit upstream of nearly every enterprise AI deployment regardless of which foundation model a company ultimately chooses.

The dynamic is similar to what is playing out across AI inference hardware, where throughput gains are reshaping what enterprise AI conversations actually cost at scale.

Fireworks published the full announcement on its official blog on July 15, 2026. The Business Wire release followed on July 16, confirming the $17.5 billion valuation and the full investor roster.
