The United Nations and humanitarian aid partners have created a $23 billion plan to help people affected by conflict, climate shocks, and economic crises. This plan is a response to the urgent need to help people all over the world whose situations have intertwined and whose crises are devastating their lives. This plan is to be given to 87 million people, and is based in Geneva, and is the starting point for the UN’s plan to help people in the year 2026.

33 countries have humanitarian aid plans to help people

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), about 33 countries have humanitarian aid plans to help people. People in these countries are in life-threatening situations. This is especially true in countries at war, such as Sudan, Gaza, and Afghanistan. People in the Horn of Africa are also in life-threatening situations because of droughts and floods. Many people in these countries desperately need humanitarian aid.

Martin Griffiths, the UNโ€™s Emergency Relief Coordinator, says,

โ€œHumanitarian needs are at record highs, yet global solidarity is falteringโ€.

This quote summarizes how, without more funding for humanitarian aid programs and initiatives, people in countries suffering from humanitarian crises will be at a greater risk of suffering from poverty and lack of basic healthcare, simple medications, and shelter.

Aid packages: What will they provide?

Every aid package will contain food, bonus healthcare, clean water, shelter, and climate resilience, adapting to extreme and more frequent weather assistance programs for families suffering from climate-change disasters. People living in extreme climate-change disasters are most vulnerable to collapsed local systems in places like Yemen and South Sudan. They aid and help mitigate. These are collapsed local systems.

What is the goal?

The plan also gives protection to vulnerable groups, and particularly women and children who are most affected in times of crisis. Educational support and psychosocial support initiatives are aimed at helping people impacted by conflict and disasters to attain greater levels of normality.

In spite of the urgency, the UN is facing at least one concerning new trend: donor fatigue. Griffiths described what he called โ€œglobal apathy,โ€ commenting on the concerning fact that, even with the multiplicity of crises, the political will, when it exists, is accompanied by little financial support.

The world is a more dangerous and unstable place to live

As conflicts arise worldwide and millions are forced to leave their homes due to climate crises, such as floods, droughts, and cyclones, this makes things more difficult.

The people who live in the Sahel suffer from extreme violence and desertification. Their homes are destroyed, and their communities are fully dependent on them. Global poverty is on the rise, and food insecurity is more extreme.

Without sufficient funding, humanitarian agencies warn that poverty, inequality, and instability will be exacerbated. These problems affect everyone, especially marginalized, conflict-affected communities. The risk of violence and displacement crises is exacerbated.

“Humanitarian aid is not charityโ€”it is a lifeline and a legal obligation under international law.”

As funding issues are a significant barrier to solving the world’s problems, the problems of 2026 also involve obligations. Humanitarian aid is a global responsibility, and it is more than charity. It is more than charity to the people of the world.

Martin Griffiths said in the 2026 appeal launch:

โ€œWe are not asking for generosity; we are asking for responsibility. Humanitarian aid is not charityโ€”it is a lifeline and a legal obligation under international law.โ€

It is a global responsibility. It is more than charity to the people of the world. Griffiths ended off by saying that they are able to respond to the issues they face with the tools and knowledge at their disposal. The only thing they’re missing is the will to respond.
