As global leaders converge for the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York, it’s no surprise that Secretary General Antonio Guterres is calling this “a moment of opportunity.” Indeed, we’re in the middle of wars, the racing climate emergency, and immense global strife, so the predictions that this would be one of the most consequential high-level engagements in recent memory is expected to come true.
A historic opening
The New President of the General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock has history attached to her as the 5th woman overall to preside over the UN. Slipping her hand on the original 1945 Charter of the United Nations, she pledges her to the office of the President of the General Assembly and spoke of urgent need for reform and unity.
“In truth, this session will not resemble any that have come before it.”
“Our world is in pain, indeed. But in the absence of the UN, imagine the agony.”
Baerbock vowed to create a central point in the cross section of the circulation of all 193 Member States and serve them equally. She will be “a bridge builder” to ensure that every voice is heard. Her priorities include implementing the UN80 reform agenda, guiding the selection of the next Secretary-General, and advancing ethics of global citizenship: peace, sustainable development, and human rights.
Over 65,000 people have lost their lives, while more than 250,000 have been abducted as prisoners. The United Nations continues to pursue a two-State Preserve for Israel and Palestine, perhaps at a great distance.
In other cases, as she noted, of injustices like in Ukraine and Afghanoistan.
“If girls in Afghainistan, or Gaza, have a chance to wake up in the most grave of situations and they fight, then so can we.”
Climate crisis: “This is our moment”
One other defining case at hand is Climate Change. On the 24th of September before COP30 in Brazil, there will be a summit where leaders will showcase their updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)- their Climate Action Plans.
Guterres then went on to say that this is their moment of Opportunity and they must drive Action across Mitigation, Adaptation, Finance and Information Integrity.
The summit will converge governments, businesses, and the civil society to focus on the acceleration of global warming and Climate Justice, above all for the vulnerable countries like the Pacific Island state which the rising seas threaten with great risk.
Reforming the UN for the 21st Century
Both Baerbock and Guterres pointed out the need for the Reform of the United Nations and for the relevant Institutions to be brought up to date.
Baerbock reminded the Head of States that “the procedure is important, the results are important. Make the UN fit for the 21st century.”
The Assembly also celebrates 30 years since the signing of the Beijing Declaration, which serves as a foundational document for achieving gender equality. The Beijing+30 Action Agenda seeks to provide women and girls with the ability to participate in the digital world; escape violence; and have equal opportunities in leadership.
AI is on the agenda for 25 September. There is presently no framework for global governance, and so leaders will seek to set “guardrails” to make sure that AI will be to the benefit of all mankind.
Guterres said that AI is likely to deepen existing inequalities and widen the digital divide without sufficient “guardrails.”
The 80th anniversary of the UN is celebrated with a lot of honors. The Assembly houses the most vital goals, which includes solving border issues, covering all the aspects of a civilized humanitarian crisis in order to avoid possible threats to humanity. The objective of the UNGA80, with the focus on bravely fostering collaboration, is to make that a reality.
