Christmas is coming to Costco — 5 top-festive items in the “What’s New?” aisle

Warehouse haven, Costco, is everyone’s favorite stop for everything from groceries to hardware to even a quick bite thanks to its affordability and wide variety of offerings. Of course, this tailored shopping experience is only accessible to those who are signed up to the membership program and pay the annual fee. But what does this mean for retirees living off a pension who also want to benefit from bargains when doing their weekly or monthly shop?

Discounts at Costco aren’t for everyone it seems

There is no doubt that the warehouse retailer generally offers great deals on its products since they are sold in bulk at whole pirces, not to mention the incredibly affordable food court that is home to the $1.50 hot dog and drink combo — the price of which has remained unchanged for over forty years.

Rising inflation rates have caused a decline in overall sales across the industry. As such, consumers are always on the hunt for budget friendly alternatives, particularly for food items. The cost of food appears to remain on an incline with reports revealing that food inflation is affecting the health of older adults in particular. Senior discounts are a norm across most industries for the most part, however, it appears that Costco, a retailer known for discounts and bargain deals, does not offer any sort of specific discount for seniors.

This is not to say that the warehouse does not offer discounts or special benefits to vulnerable populations, it does, just as any other company would. Since the company uses a membership based business model, to be able to enjoy the bulk offerings sold at the warehouse, customers must pay a $65 annual fee. This is the cost of a standard membership, however, there are selected groups of people who can receive $20 and $40 on the Costco Shop Card when they sign up, instantly getting a portion of their fee back.

Beneficiaries of this small cash back on membership fees include college students, teachers, medical workers, emergency personnel, government employees and people in the military. Senior citizens do not feature on this list, however.

Why have a membership system?

The notion of paying a fee to be allowed to shop at a store may sound kind of silly at first but it is precisely this small annual fee that enables the business to maintain its low, competitive pricing across departments. The warehouse’s main source of profits come from the membership fees and as such, offering too many discounts on the fee would result in reduced profits and cause an increase in product pricing.

How can seniors save?

No discounted membership eligibility for seniors is, of course, not optimal but this does not mean that they have to write-off the retailer entirely. Investing in a memberships means seniors can enjoy wholesale food prices which is without doubt lower than that of smaller retailers. Another service that makes up for the lack of discounted membership is the same-day delivery option. Going out and shopping in such a large space can be difficult for some and to aid this, Costco offers home delivery and same-day delivery options for those who cannot physically visit a store.

A 2022 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) showed that approximately 20% of seniors tried to cope with drug costs by skipping or reducing doses, not filling or delaying prescriptions, or using someone else’s medication. Fortunately, Costco offers its members significant discounts on prescription drugs, ranging from 2% to 40%, as well as possible deals on certain types of insurance.

Another plus for seniors with Costco memberships is the store’s partnership with Sesame Care,  an online platform that connects patients and providers. Membership holders can benefit from exclusive discounts and offers on Sesame Care.
