One of America’s off-price chains, Marshalls, has recently confirmed the permanent closure of two of its stores. These stores include the massive locations in California, such as the one on Hollywood Boulevard. This news comes after there was a series of closures this past year, specifically in the retail industry. Many stores have felt the pressure of the current state of the economy to the point where some of these stores were forced to close their doors.
Details of the permanent closure
Marshalls confirmed that the retailer will be permanently closing certain stores and that the final day of service for two of these stores is just weeks away. This retailer, which is known as the bargain store, is, however, opening over a dozen new stores. The closure of these stores marks another blow to the high street as big retail names continue to struggle.
In addition, the bargain-hunting favorite confirmed that it will be shutting down its Hollywood and San Jose branches early next year, which include more than 120 jobs set that would be axed. The move comes amid a growing wave of retail closures making its way across the Unites States. The reason for this is because of the current changing shopping and consumer habits. Another contributor is the soaring costs which forces brands to rethink their store footprints.
Marshalls is a retail chain owned by TJX Companies, which also runs TJ Maxx and HomeGoods. These closures impact many staff members of the stores that will be closing. These closures serve as another blow in a year of brutal retail cutbacks. Although Marshalls plans to close two of the company’s California stores in January 2026, the department store chain is also opening 14 new stores.
The pressure in the sector
As mentioned previously, these closures echo the wider troubles that is currently existing within the retail sector. Despite the closure of Marshalls’ two stores, other retailers such as fashion chain Forever 21, also announced its plans to shut all 354 of its United States stores. This decision is made after the company filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, in March.
In addition, the leadership of the company blamed “rising costs and increased competition from abroad” for the collapse. As stated by Brad Sell, who is Forever 21’s chief financial officer (CFO), “We are deeply grateful for the support you have shown us over the years. But rising costs and increased competition from abroad have made our current business model unsustainable.”
Many of the analysts issued a warning to the public stating that more retail store closures could follow as retailers grapple with high rents. Other challenges that the retail industry is currently facing are online competition and fading footfall in once-busy shopping districts. It is important to note that Marshalls has not announced any additional closures yet. Both the California stores will permanently close their doors in the first week of January 2026. It is highlighting the end of decades of bargain shopping in these two stores of the state’s busiest retail corridors.
