Say Goodbye: Macy’s Just Offloaded a Former Anchor for a Fraction of Its Price — What’s Moving Into This Mall Next

Macy’s store closures in 2025 have provoked a great impact, especially among its shoppers. Who are now wondering what would happen to the legendary giant retail stores, and what this would mean to the whole industry itself. It seems these shutdowns are a plan created by Macy’s to adapt themselves to the continuous evolution of the Market and its current needs. The economic adversities and the constant changes in customers’ shopping tastes and preferences are some of the main reasons why the company seems decided to afford the risk of changing its strategy and closing nearly 66 stores in 2025. However, what are the main reasons behind these closures? Some include:

  1. Footfall is decreasing drastically as more shoppers prefer to buy their items online.
  2.  Online stores and platforms reduce the need to visit the stores physically.
  3. Growing costs: Operational expenses, such as paying rent and staffing, make it pretty difficult to keep open underperforming stores.
  4. Digital Transition: Macy’s has invested a significant amount of money in its e-commerce platforms, which nowadays, represent its main sales channel.

This is not the first time the top retail store has done something similar. A few decades ago, Macy’s decided to close down hundreds of outlets as part of its denominated “Polaris Strategy”, which intended to improve the financial conditions of the company, as well as its digital presence.

Which are the stores closing?

Macy’s store closures in 2025 are going to affect some strategic areas in several states. This means, that some regions will experience more losses than others. Here´s a brief list of the most affected areas and stores:

New York: The locations both in Manhattan and Rochester that are among the most beloved and known will be closing.

California: The stores in San Francisco, Glendale, and Pasadena are about to close.

Texas: The stores located in Houston, Austin, and Dallas are soon to be closed too

Impact on its Customers

Macy’s loyal customers will probably face big adjustments due to the closures of physical stores by 2025. While some may find that troublesome, the company has committed to prioritizing better online shopping experiences.

Before the shutdowns take place, the affected retailers will mostly keep alive fire sales with great discounts. Also, as mentioned before, Macy´s is working to increase its online services improving its e-commerce platform by speeding shipping and providing a greater item selection.

However, to clients who prefer in-store shopping, these closures may result in accessibility restrictions, specifically in locations where Macy´s is still a major retail leader.

Economic Implications

The shutdowns of Macy’s stores could have beyond economic consequences for the communities within they’re located, as these stores usually act as main employers that direct traffic to other nearby businesses.  Consequently, this might result in job losses and decreased economic activities in the impacted areas. Yet, the company executives insist these closures are necessary to maintain long-term liability. Macy´s CEO, Jeff Gennette said: “This choice is the reflection of our commitment to align our resources together with client needs, while we navigate through the adversities of a highly competitive retail landscape.”

Macy’s Future

Macy’s  is still confident about the future to come. The retail company intends to expand its online exposure while investing in smaller and more efficient physical stores. The purpose of this is to provide a flawless shopping experience, by combining the best of digital and in-store retail. The retail company has also launched new collaborations and opening moves such as extending product offerings and using data-driven observations, to deliver a better service for all its customers.

While the decision to close Macy’s  stores this 2025, may signify a critical juncture in the history of the major retail store and will disappoint some of its clients, adapting itself to the changing retail market, seems like a sensible step, as well as focusing on digital growth while polishing its processes. This could bring an opportunity for shoppers to take advantage of new fire deals shortly, and at the same time be able to explore what its online platform has to offer.

In an era where retail businesses need to keep evolving, Macy’s efforts to innovate and keep focusing on customer satisfaction will be the key to its continued success.
