Calpine Corporation announced the completion of the second phase of its massive 400 MW power supply deal with CyrusOne, marking a major achievement for energy development in Texas infrastructure. The new deal further boosts power to 210 MW from 190 MW announced in July, making it one of the biggest power deals for data centers inside the state of Texas. This move positions the two companies at the cutting edge of growing demands for hyperscale data centers and AI-related applications.

Strategic expansion adds to a full 400 MW power contract

The Phase 2 deal further advances Calpine’s total investment to 400 MW for CyrusOne to support its hyperscale data center located near its Thad Hill Energy Center in Bosque County, Texas. This new development is reflective of Calpine’s innovative Powered Land Capabilities offering, which addresses all customer requirements for power-related solutions through its capabilities for power generation and connectivity to power facilities for its mission-critical clients.

The Cyrus One facility is still under construction and is expected to come online by the fourth quarter of 2026, marking a major investment in the growing data center market for the state of Texas. This collaboration is one such example of visionary partnership needed to keep pace with growing demands being driven by AI-related workloads and hyperscale computing operations, to name just two examples.

Grid reliability coordination enhances Texas energy infrastructure

One of the most innovative parts of the Calpine-Cyrus One collaboration is its coordinated activities for ensuring network reliability during times of supply shortages. According to Calpine’s President and CEO, Andrew Novotny, “These collaborative agreements have helped improve overall network reliability by making generation curtailments possible when necessary while at the same time providing substantial economic benefit to local communities and to the state of Texas.”

This new deal makes Texas poised to retain its dominant position within the crucial AI competition while at the same time ensuring power reliability for all players. Calpine’s premier generation assets within Texas have been strategically poised to facilitate quick development by large load and mission-critical customers, thus solidifying Calpine’s premier position as a power solutions provider for large-scale industrial players within Texas.

The “Best-in-Class Powered Land Capabilities” offered by Calpine are its unparalleled experience in serving large power load customers like data centers, providing differentiated products and services to create reliable power while maintaining Texas as the energy capital of the world, and addressing “the unique business requirements” of data center partners.

Emerging growth opportunities indicate that further growth is expected

The successful execution of Phase 2 at Thad Hill Energy Center now makes Calpine poised to demonstrate its capabilities for similar projects at other facilities among its large generation network in Texas. “This expanded contract secures Calpine’s position at the forefront of safe, scalable power supply for hyperscale customers, and we’re confident we’ll continue to deliver at future projects around our generation assets,” said Rick Peña, Executive Vice President of Corporate Development at Calpine.

“Our collaboration is just one example of what is needed to address explosive growth in data center demand while still being good stewards of energy use,” said CyrusOne CEO Eric Schwartz at the ground-breaking ceremony of the Thad Hill Facility. This new energy center at the Thad Hill facility will set new benchmarks for all future hyperscale facilities to come, not only within Texas but also around the world.

Calpine’s Phase 2 expansion project at Cyrus One is a paradigm shift in addressing power requirements for data centers while also ensuring reliability for power supplies. It is significant to understand that this 400 MW deal is one step toward resolving intricate issues associated with AI-driven expansion while providing benefits to communities at large. It is imperative to note at this point that Texas is at the forefront of the energy transition being witnessed around the globe.
