Illinois law enforcement agencies are undertaking the most significant campaign in several years to ensure road safety during the Thanksgiving holidays, as police target hazardous driving offenses that tend to increase during the period. Police agencies in Illinois have combined resources to deal with DUI offenses and seat-belt citations. It is appropriate that the enforcement comes at a time when travel during the holidays poses distinct challenges.

Enforcement campaign extends twelve critical days

The Champaign Police Department has partnered with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and in excess of 200 other agencies in taking part in the combined safety enforcement operation. Their enforcement effort will target drunk and unbuckled drivers from November 21 through December 2, in accordance with peak travel times during Thanksgiving.

“Holidays are times of family and friendship when every citizen deserves safe passage home,” said Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler while reiterating the mission of the campaign.

The enforcement of the campaign will occur through arterial roadways where there will be increased traffic flow during the holidays. Citations and warnings will be issued to violators, who will, in turn, have enforcement promoted to ensure compliance with Illinois traffic safety laws. Success in these initiatives relies on cooperation between law enforcement and concerned members of the public.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office joins comprehensive safety initiative

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with the “Click It or Ticket” and “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaigns in the state, taking enforcement beyond the scope of traditional impaired driving offenses. Deputies plan to enforce seatbelt offenses, speeding, distracted driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including marijuana, which can impair reaction times.

Cannabis-induced impairment creates especially difficult situations for law enforcement due to the delay in onset and the driving impairments that can persist for several hours after consumption. The important role of hosts in keeping party guests safe at the holidays can easily begin with providing nonalcoholic drinks and working with guests to find ways for them to get home safely.

Federal funding supports enhanced enforcement capabilities

This Illinois traffic safety program receives federal traffic safety money from the Illinois Department of Transportation, which allows enhanced enforcement powers during peak travel times. It enables the deployment of additional police officers during peak travel times when increased enforcement is not feasible without government support due to budget constraints. It can thus be said that federal government support acknowledges the issue of holiday traffic safety as something that needs collective intervention.

Prevention strategies emphasize personal responsibility and planning

To maintain safety during holidays, there must be planning and responsibility from all members of society, rather than waiting for enforcement from law agencies after offenses have taken place. The key to success in preventing such cases includes choosing DD drivers before party events, using public transport or ride-sharing services, and remaining keen to notice signs of intoxication in relatives and friends.

Emergency response strategies target public cooperation in the identification of allegedly impaired drivers by pulling over to a secure location and calling 911, thus building partnerships with law enforcement agencies. Wearing seat belts offers the most practical means of protection from impaired drivers, regardless of the effectiveness of prevention strategies aimed at eliminating the problem. The success of the campaign relies on cooperation from the public in following safety standards beyond individual responsibility.

Police agencies in the state of Illinois are using evidence-based strategies that have shown effectiveness in reducing crashes and resulting deaths and serious injuries around the Thanksgiving holidays. The coordinated enforcement effort, together with public education and federal financial support, helps build comprehensive safety networks aimed at keeping families who travel during the Thanksgiving holidays safe.
