U.S. expects $50B monthly from new tariffs, says Lutnick

India, just like any other country in the world, was hit with high tariffs, and despite Trump making up his mind, the Asian country still wants to have a talk about it, as they are hoping something could change, or maybe India and the USA can come up with a deal. In the intricate realm of global commerce, discussions frequently persist despite notable obstacles. Sometimes nations are determined to engage in discourse in the hopes of discovering mutually beneficial paths, even in the face of significant financial obstacles. These continued discussions demonstrate that communication can continue.

India wants trade discussions to continue despite the US tariff increase

India hopes trade talks with the U.S. will continue even as the U.S. hiked tariffs on its exports to 50% due to New Delhi’s purchase of sanctioned Russian oil, two lawmakers said on Monday, citing a briefing to a parliamentary panel on foreign affairs. Last week, President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods due to Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil.

Bringing the total duty on Indian exports to the U.S. to 50%, among the highest of any American trading partner. Shashi Tharoor, an opposition Congress party leader who heads the panel, said trade talks would continue. One of the lawmakers said, citing the foreign secretary’s briefing to the panel,

“Our relations with the U.S. are multi-dimensional, and should not be seen only through the prism of trade.”

Despite worries about tariffs, the US Trade Delegation visit is on track

“As of now, there is no change in the existing plans for the sixth round,” he said, referring to a scheduled visit of a U.S. trade delegation to New Delhi from August 25. Earlier, junior finance minister Pankaj Chaudhary told lawmakers that about 55% of India’s merchandise exports to the United States would be covered by the new tariff.

His estimate factored in the initial 25% levy, he said in a written response to a lawmaker’s query. Chaudhary added,

“The Department of Commerce is engaged with all stakeholders for their assessment of the situation.”

Goods trade between the United States and India โ€“ the world’s biggest and fifth-largest economies, respectively โ€“ was worth about $87 billion in the last fiscal year, according to Indian government estimates. The panel separately voiced concerns over Pakistani army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir’s reported remarks on nuclear threats in South Asia during a visit to the U.S.

Despite tariff increases, continued trade negotiations highlight the value of communication

The choice to continue talks in spite of the tariff increase exemplifies a broader idea in global trade: communication frequently produces better results than escalation or isolation. Increased market access, closer investment relations, and more stable trade policies are just a few benefits of collaboration for both nations.

“Nuclear blackmail will not work with India, and no party, or representative disagrees with this view,” Tharoor said, adding the external affairs ministry had condemned the comments. India is fighting to get things right for its nation and to avoid inflation that will affect its economy and communities. However, it is not only India; Putin meets Witkoff as the Trump sanctions deadline nears.

The tenacity and realism that define effective economic diplomacy are demonstrated by India’s resolve to carry on trade negotiations with the United States in spite of the dramatic increase in tariffs. Even while increased tariffs pose significant obstacles, they haven’t stopped communication or the search for win-win deals. The circumstance serves as a reminder that in international trade, perseverance and patience are frequently essential for overcoming challenges and forming more solid alliances for the future. Who knows? Perhaps they might win this battle.
